unknowingly using images that might end up being copyrighted
-
If I use an image for a post to teach or comment about prayer, and the image is found by google search for prayer images, and there is no copyright notice on the image, or “owner” identified with the image, is it fair use? and this is also for just that one post, and there is no commercial use or profit from use of the image. it is just one of several images to show someone praying….the image would not identify the person….they have a head covering on so the person’s ID is anonymous. I read the copyright notice but it does not make sense to me. . So this would not be “knowingly” taking someone’s image and using it since I would not even know who the “owner” is. . If I find out later it is copyrighted, is deleting the image enough of a positive response?

also, if I end up finding out later that any image I use is copyrighted, when my use was personal , non profit, teaching…….do I need to pay them, after deleting the image?
I would rather not use any images at all, than to worry about this…..

No. When you go to Google’s image cache you are viewing indexed images on web sites and blogs and the majority are under copyright. You are not in a store. You are not in a help yourself freebie center. You need to get a grip on what copyright means and know that without prior written permission from any copyright holder use of their images is a breach of copyright. http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html The attempted cop-out of I didn’t know it was against the law doesn’t cut it. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. http://en.support.wordpress.com/fair-use/

how can I then verify that something is copyrighted, if it does not say so?
so the links you gave guarantee that these are copyright free images?
thank you

Copyright is automatically vested in every creator at the time of creation. If and only if the copyright holder provides terms of use for their creations then they become available for others to use.
The support doc I linked to previously here http://en.support.wordpress.com/fair-use/ has links at the bottom to more resources re: fair use.
