Unknown sidebar
-
I just switched my site to the Grisaille theme and now I have a sidebar with three widgets displaying on 3 of my pages that I don’t want. When I go to the Widget submenu only a single sidebar appears, the one that I do want, and it is configured as I set it up. I’ve looked at every menu and submenu I can find, but I can’t find the offending sidebar anywhere. The unwanted widgets that I’m trying t get rid of are: Archives, Meta, Categories and Bookmarks. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Widgets now have “visibility” settings so we can select which pages they display on. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility

All widgets are accessed here > Appearance > Widgets
After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes. -
Timetheif,
Thanks for the input but my problem is just the opposite: the widgets that are appearing are a) ones that I don’t want and b) when I go to the “Appearance>Widgets” submenu, this isn’t a sidebar showing that contains them.
I know how to add and remove widgets and use the Visibility settings. What I can’t figure out is why this sidebar is appearing at all. If I could find the menu option that has established it, I’m pretty sure I could get rid of it. But I find where the I^&* thing is being created.

re: widget visibility settings
Setting hide if X doesn’t mean remove X from the widget, it means remove the widget from X. Are you clear on that? It sounds like you have reversed thinking. The blog is private and Volunteers cannot view it so it’s like working in the dark. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

I’m guessing that this sidebar is established in the theme’s CSS stylesheet. Does that make sense?
What I don’t know is how to modify that CSS, or for that matter, even view it, here on WordPress.com. On my self hosted site, I could handle this easily.

I tried adding the widgets I don’t want into the sidebar that I do want and then setting the Visibility to only showing those widgets on a page where I can tolerate them. But it didn’t work – it didn’t affect the sidebar that I don’t want at all.

You can view the stylesheet here https://wpcom-themes.svn.automattic.com/grisaille/style.css
You cannot edit the CSS without purchasing the the annually renewable custom design upgrade:

OK. Thanks for the pointer. If I understand what I’m seeing there, that is in fact the cause of my difficulty.

Hi there!
Very sorry for the trouble you experienced. Some themes such as Grisaille are set to display a default set of widgets in absence of widgets that you put in yourself. This could be easily solved by inserting an empty Text Widget if you prefer not to display them.
Feel free to switch back to Grisaille and see if this solution works for you. Cheers!

druesome,
Thanks for the tip. Where I was unable to solve the problem yesterday, I switched to another theme (Hum) and went on my merry way. But I really like Grisaille so I might try going back and giving your suggestion a try.
But if I may, I’d like to ask a different but related question: I’m building a BuddyPress site that is self hosted. And the widgets there do not have the “Visibility” option that they do here on wp.com. I know that there are many differences between what is offered here vs the wp.org version of the WP tool, but I’m wondering if Visibility will ever make it’s way over to the other side?

Hey rmsegroves,
You may have better luck asking for that feature at the BuddyPress support forums:
Cheers! :)

Is it help in french?

Hi there!
Your theme “Ideation and Intent” reserves one sidebar to display your latest ten posts that have image attachments. Thus, it will only appear once you have ten posts with images attached.
For more info about your theme, click here:

Let me know if you need anything else. Cheers!
