unmap domain because we want to transfer domain to WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not seeing this problem mentioned.
For years, the domain http://www.TourDemParks.org has been mapped to TourDemParks.wordpress.com

At the same time, the domain was redirected to WordPress via DNS redirect (it’s been hosted on NameCheap).

We wanted to transfer the domain to WordPress.com but had trouble doing so. Now, we have a WP business plan and we would like, again, to transfer our domain to WP, but it seems like we can’t do it because the domain is already mapped to WP (oy). Do we need to unmap the domain before we can transfer the domain?

I know it sounds confusing, but to the outside world, the end result will look the same as it ever was. We want to replace a mapping with a transfer.

    Thank you,
    Richard for TdemP

  • Hi @tdemp2015! Transfers are pretty new here. Let me see if we can sort out how best to handle this – we can update you here or via private email. Any preference?

Also you know you can reach support at http://wordpress.com/help/contact, correct?

  • Also, from what I’m reading, we *should* still be able to transfer the domain in, even though it’s mapped. What’s happening when you try?

    Hi Supernovia,
you can reply here & I’ll get it. Now we’re in even worse trouble because neither https://TourDemParks.org nor http://TourDemParks.WordPress.com is working now because I was trying to engineer this swap from a mapping to a transfer. We’re ok for a day or 2, but we need this fixed by the new year.

We have access to the domain server on NameCheap (what we’re trying to transfer to WorPress).

If we can’t get this untangled this weekend, we will have to try to reinstate our earlier configuration.

From memory: in the domains pages we’re supposed to see a button for ‘new domain’ that wasn’t there, because we were mapping our domain. If we tried to unmap our domain, there was no option to do so. Our purchasing (I think it’s called) showed both our mapping service and our business plan service. No option to edit or delete the mapping service.

Thanks & let me know if you need more info from us.

At the moment we are locked out of our WordPress acct. If we try to access https://TourDemParks.WordPress.com, it redirects to http://TourDemParks.org which I had disabled in an attempt to complete this domain transfer. (Our domain is registered with NameCheap). We can’t see our pages and we can’t access our admin backend tools.

If WordPress can ‘un-redirect’ our URL, in other words, make the WordPress URL no longer link or point to http://www.TourDemParks.org, but function normally, then we might at least be able to access our WP admin pages. This might involve some combination of a URL redirect, a DNS declaration, etc.

In other words, restore the WP URL function without redirection: https://tourdemparks.wordpress.com

Once that is working again, we might be able to try again to complete the transfer of our domain to WordPress.com, from NameCheap.

    Thanks again,
    Richard for TdemP

    OK, I got into TdemP’s admin pages/domains:
    https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/tourdemparks.org/dns/tourdemparks.org

Listed on this page are the DNS settings that we can’t edit:

    CNAME
    *.tourdemparks.org
    Handled by WordPress.com

    A
    tourdemparks.org
    Handled by WordPress.com

    NS
    tourdemparks.org
    Handled by WordPress.com

If WordPress can delete these settings or return them to normal WP defaults, then our website should work normally from the WP URLs (I think). Then, we can talk about transferring our domain to WordPress.com.

  • Hi @tdemp2015, I wonder if we’re referring to the same thing actually – those settings are OK for domain mapping.

I noticed the domain’s settings are pointed here though:

    dns2.registrar-servers.com.
    dns1.registrar-servers.com.

Do you want to point that to WordPress.com or did you need them pointed elsewhere?

Regarding the domain transfer itself, were you trying these steps or another process? Let me know and we’ll help get this sorted.

By the way, I recommended chat because it’s a lot faster though you are welcome to work with us here too. I’d just logged out for the evening before I saw your next reply. In chat or email, you’re automatically routed to whoever is available next.

    Hi Supernovia,

I can’t chat right now but I want to be as explicit as possible about what is happening here.

tourdemparks.org is registered with namecheap.com whose dns records are, apparently: dns1.registrar-servers.com (etc.)

For years, we have redirected our domain to WordPress.com, to the URL:
    https://tourdemparks.wordpress.com (or)
    https://tourdemparks.org.wordpress.com
    (whichever of those is right.)

This has worked for years, but we wanted to transfer the registration from NameCheap to WordPress (lose the redirect) and read recently (this week) that we could transfer our domain, which in the past we could not transfer.

TourDemParks.org now has a WP Business acct.

We are trying to transfer our domain, tourdemparks.org, from NameCheap to WordPress. In the process, I noodled up the DNS settings so that now we are locked out of our WP site.

If something is not clear, please ask me specific questions that I can clarify. I might be able to chat later today.

    Thank you,
    Richard for TdemP

  • Thanks Richard. Is there any reason you were using dns1.registrar-servers.com (etc.) instead of these?

    ns1.wordpress.com

    ns2.wordpress.com

    ns3.wordpress.com

Sometimes folks will use their own name servers instead if they have a complicated setup with mail or other services. Is that the case for you, or was there just some confusion re: forwarding the domain vs using our name servers?

  • Unknown's avatar

For years, tourdemparks was redirecting to:
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

and it was working that way for years. Recently I tried to initiate a domain transfer to WordPress that wasn’t working. So, in an attempt to make the transfer work, I tried disabling the redirect/mapping to WordPress. This resulted in our DNS being reverted to NameCheap’s defaults which are :
    dns1.registrar-servers.com (etc.)

tourdemparks now has a Business acct on WordPress. We do not want to go back to the old redirect/mapping, we want to transfer our domain registration to WordPress.com.

The DNS is NameCheap’s default because we are trying to leave NameCheap. We would like for WordPress to change our domain registration to WordPress. Can this happen?

Can WordPress transfer our domain to WordPress.com
    or not?

    Richard for TdemP

  • Got it, redirecting is something quite different than using those name servers.

Can I recommend setting the name severs back to these first, and waiting for that to take effect again?

    ns1.wordpress.com

    ns2.wordpress.com

    ns3.wordpress.com

Then we can troubleshoot the transfer. No need to change the name servers or unmap anything. If it isn’t working, let’s get the error you’re getting and correct that.

    ok Supernovie,
that’s a plan. I can chat now if that helps.

    Supernovia,
    DNS reset to WordPress.com:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Our website is working again: https://www.TourDemparks.org
Now we would like to transfer our domain from NameCheap to WordPress.

    Thank you,
    Richard for TdemP

  • Thanks Richard, what’s happening now when you try these steps?
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

on our ‘domains’ page we see 1 domain: tourdemparks.org marked as ‘mapped domain’

Support docs say that we should be seeing a blue box that reads ‘add domain’ but that blue button does not exist.

This is why I switched the DNS, in an attempt to disable domain mapping.

    Supernovia —
that link popped right up & started working immediately!
I have no idea why we didn’t see that earlier, was it already available to us?

At this time, the domain transfer has been initiated & WordPress & NameCheap are talking to each other. We should be completed in the next couple days. Thank you so much for your patience and your help. I hope we weren’t too hard on you. I write back when I hear back.
