unmaping domain/redirecting domain to external host

    I bough a domain thru wordpress.com and had it mapped to my wordpress.com blog.
    However I now want my domain (fromportugaltotheworld.com) to point to an external host where I’ll store my self-hosted wordpress site.

    In a reply to my question regarding whether or not I needed to unmap the domain I got this reply from a member of your staff:

    “In order to point a domain to a site hosted elsewhere, you will need to update the name server information for the domain. Depending on your new hosting provider, you may also need to set (or ask us to set) A records for you.”

    I have already tried change the nameservers to the ones of my host provider. But they (my host provider) tell me that that is wrong and that the nameserver has to be yours and what I need to do is to change the DNS.

    I don’t know how to configure the DNS however.

    MX <pref> <host>.
    TXT <text>
    CNAME <subdomain> <host>.
    A <subdomain> <IP>
    SRV <_service._protocol> <priority> <weight> <port> <domain>

    I don’t know what to write in this chunk of code.
    I’ve read all the documentation but I’m still not able to do it and I’m getting really confused.

    Is there any way you could help me with this?

    Thank you very much for your quick reply!

    My site will be hosted thru http://www.ptisp.pt
    They provided me with nameservers and told me I had to change them in the DNS settings of my current domain provider, which I did.

    Nameservers provided by hosting service:

    DNS 1: ns1.mydnspt.net (109.71.47.252)
    DNS 2: ns2.mydnspt.net (130.185.85.17)
    DNS 3: ns7.mydnspt.net (184.82.129.170)
    DNS 4: ns8.mydnspt.net (188.40.99.131)

    However my domain is still pointing to wordpress.com so I’m at a loss.
    This sounds fairly easy but I don’t seem to get it…

    Hi there, when you change DNS information, it can take some time for it to propagate throughout the Internet.

    When I visit http://fromportugaltotheworld.com/ I don’t see your WordPress.com site, I see this page:

    http://cl.ly/image/35130e330x3e

    If you’re not seeing that yet, please try clearing your browser cache.

    Please let me know how it goes.

    Hi kathrynwp,

    You were right, I just had to wait a bit and clear my cache.
    The issue seems to me almost resolved now. I can already access the content of my site hosted outside wordpress.com. The domain is still not 100% correct but I’ll get there :)
