Unpark Domain Please; I would like to Purchase It
-
Hello,
Please unpark robertedwinkelly.com.
I would like to buy it as a part of an upgrade plan.
I tried to do this before, but I bought the domain before I bought the plan, which includes the domain. So then I took a refund for the domain, but that refund then parked my preferred domain (robertedwinkelly.com). So I cancelled my upgrade too.
Sorry for the all the mess. I am new to this. I am happy to buy an annual plan and use that domain if you will re-open it.
Thank you,
Robert Kelly

Hi Robert,
A domain is only included for free if you buy it as part of a plan. If you buy the domain first, and then the plan, the domain is viewed as a completely separate upgrade.
But in this case I’d be happy to link them up for you manually. Please go to Upgrades ->Plans and add a new plan to your site. Let me know here once you’ve done that, and I’ll restore the domain and link it to your plan.

Hi,
Ok. Thanks. Done. I bought the personal plan for two years. So please attach http://www.RobertEdwinKelly.com to it.
I have two more questions, please:
1. I would like traffic to my other free WordPress site – http://www.AsianSecurityBlog.wordpress. com – to go to http://www.RobertEdwinKelly.com also. Is there anyway to do that, just as traffic to http://www.RobertEdwinKelly.wordpress.com will now go to http://www.RobertEdwinKelly.com?
2. On my ‘Plans’ tab, it says: “You have $84.00 of pro-rated credits available from your current plan. Apply those credits towards an upgrade before they expire!” What does that mean, please?
Thank you for your help. I’ve never done this before, so I kinda made a mess of it. Sorry. I appreciate the help.

Done. I bought the personal plan for two years
Thanks. I’ve restored your domain, but note the domain registration is only for one year, not two, like the plan. So next year you’ll need to pay to renew the domain only, and the year after that you’ll have two payments for the plan and domain respectively.
1. I would like traffic to my other free WordPress site – http://www.AsianSecurityBlog.wordpress. com – to go to http://www.RobertEdwinKelly.com also.
You can do this by buying our Site Redirect upgrade for the other site.
2. On my ‘Plans’ tab, it says: “You have $84.00 of pro-rated credits available from your current plan. Apply those credits towards an upgrade before they expire!” What does that mean, please?
If you were to decide to upgrade from the current Personal Plan to Premium or Business instead, the $84 cost of a two-year Personal Plan is applied as an automatic discount, so you won’t pay full price for the more expensive plan.
This credit is pro-rated, meaning it’s based on how long you’ve already owned the current plan. If, for example, you only decided six months from now to upgrade to the Premium Plan, the remaining credit on your current Personal Plan will be only $42.
Let me know if you have any other questions about this :)

Thank you. A few more questions, please:
1. Do I need to buy an upgrade plan for Asiansecurityblog.wordpress.com just to get the site redirect plug-in? That seems like a waste of money since the whole point of buying the plugin is not to use the old website anymore. Can I get the plugin as a part of the plan I already paid for? Or can I buy it independently?
2. I cannot connect Facebook, as I did Twitter and Linked-In, in the page ‘Marketing and Integrations.’ Can you help me?
3. How do I activate ‘Payments’ element of the upgrade plan I purchased? The plan reads: ‘Accept one-time, monthly, or annual payments on your website.’ I would like to set that up.
4. My most preferred domain is actually http://www.robertkelly.com. That is unavailable, but if one navigates to that address, there is nothing there. So can I buy that domain somehow? I would be happy to pay WordPress for that.
5. Can you recommend a good theme for academics? I am using the Twenty Eleven theme, which is ok, I guess. But is there one better for scholars and academics? Your advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you. I am new to actually owning my own site. Sorry for all the questions.

This isn’t a plugin, but an upgrade you buy directly for the site you want to redirect. It doesn’t require any plan.
Looks like I forgot to include the link in my last reply. Sorry about that:
https://wordpress.com/en/support/site-redirect/
2. I cannot connect Facebook, as I did Twitter and Linked-In, in the page ‘Marketing and Integrations.’ Can you help me?
What is the URL of the Facebook page you want to connect? And what happens when you try?
Note that Facebook only allows connections to Pages, not to your personal Profile.
3. How do I activate ‘Payments’ element of the upgrade plan I purchased? The plan reads: ‘Accept one-time, monthly, or annual payments on your website.’ I would like to set that up.
You can find detailed steps here:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/payments/
4. My most preferred domain is actually http://www.robertkelly.com. That is unavailable, but if one navigates to that address, there is nothing there. So can I buy that domain somehow? I would be happy to pay WordPress for that.
I wish we could help here, but that domain is currently registered through another domain provider, Rebel.com, so it belongs to someone else. You can always contact that domain provider directly to find out if the current owner of the domain might be willing to sell it to you, but we’re not able to help facilitate that process from our end.
5. Can you recommend a good theme for academics? I am using the Twenty Eleven theme, which is ok, I guess. But is there one better for scholars and academics? Your advice would be much appreciated.
You can look at Textbook:
https://wordpress.com/theme/textbook
That theme is designed around the traditional look for a university/college website. But for the most part our themes aren’t geared towards a particular subject or profession, so that’s the closest I can recommend.
The “best” theme for your site is much more about the overall look you’re going for. Do you want something more formal? Go with Textbook. Something not quite as formal, but still modern and stylish, and not quite as “bloggy” as Twenty Eleven? Consider one of our new block themes, Geologist, Zoologist or Livro (all three of which support the new site editor, so they come with a ton of customization possibilities built in).
It also depends on whether you’re looking for specific features, whether your site is more page-based, or more blog-based.
So if you can share a bit more about what your goal is with the site and what type of content you’ll be posting, we might be able to offer a more definite recommendation.
But ultimately, my advice when picking a theme in most cases is scroll through the thumbnails in the theme showcase, and pick the one that feels right to you :)

Thank you.
1. I bought the redirect. Thank you. How long does that last? A year? Two? Permanently?
2. I am trying to connect my standard Facebook page (I think), so that my my website posts to show up there, as they now do on Twitter and Linked-In. Here is my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/robert.kelly.35762/. If you could help me connect it to the domain I just bought with you guys, that would be great.
Thanks for the assistance.

Hi there,
1. I bought the redirect. Thank you. How long does that last? A year? Two? Permanently?
The Site Redirect upgrade renews on a yearly basis. So you can keep up as long as you need it.

You can use the Publicize feature to connect your site to your Facebook page and automatically post there your blog posts. You can find detailed instructions on how to configure that here:

Thank you.
Is that renewal automatic? I’d like it not to be. I figure I’ll use that redirect for a year or two at most, and then shut down the old site.
I understand the connect and publicize features. Thank you. The problem is that when I try to connect Facebook, it simply doesn’t go through. The connection pop-up screen simply closes and the connection remains unmade. Connecting works fine with Tumblr, Twitter, and Linked-In, but not Facebook. I don’t know why. Can you help me?
Thank you for your time.

Yes, it’s set to auto-renew. You can turn it off though by going to your Purchases page (https://wordpress.com/me/purchases), selecting the Site Redirect upgrade, and then turning off the Auto-Renew toggle.

I just realized that your Facebook page is not actually a page but a profile. You cannot connect a WordPress.com site to a Facebook profile. This is not allowed by Facebook itself.
-
Thank you for the auto-renewal info. That helped. Is there anyway to buy that redirect permanently, made at some kind of bulk-price? I used that old site – asiansecurityblog.wordpress.com – for a decade, but now I am writing under my own name. I’d like to just buy a permanent redirect for the old site and forget about it.
Regarding Facebook, I understand now. Personal profiles vs business pages, right? But WordPress could, in the past, connect to Facebook profiles, right? I am almost positive that I once could post to my Facebook feed. My old wordpress account – asiansecurityblog.wordpress.com, the one I am redirecting away from now – connected to Facebook awhile back.
Is this a change Facebook? They introduced ‘Pages’ as a business tool and the removed WordPress integration from the personal Profile?
Thank you

That’s not possible, I’m afraid. We only offer annual subscriptions for Site Redirect.

Yes, Facebook removed the possibility of third-party apps to post to personal profiles. You now need to manually share your posts, if you like to have them on your personal Facebook wall.

Thank you.
I have another question please:
Is it possible to set WordPress to always open links in a new tab?
Right now, I must enable that manually every time I add a link. That is a hassle. Is it possible to have option that on by default, rather than off, as it is now?
Here is something on the forums about this, but it is out of date. And here is something which says I must buy a plugin to do this.
I am grateful for your help. Thank you

Hi there,
There’s no setting to set that as the default option. And even using the HTML trick mentioned in that thread doesn’t make any sense as there’s a toggle now.
