Unparking (activating) my domain

• Unknown's avatar

I am trying to activate (unpark) my domain that I purchased on WordPress.com through an external host (Godaddy), but my site is parked by Automattic. I have already changed the nameservers to point to Godaddy. What I am trying to do is move my blog in order to self-host on WordPress.org. Do I need to also purchase an offsite redirect upgrade in order to unpark my domain?

My wordpress.com blog is riskywhisk.wordpress.com and my domain that I purchased on wordpress.com is theriskywhisk.com.

Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

More or less the steps:

Point your Domain Name (theriskywhisk.com) to the proper name-servers at Godaddy since you don’t seem to be using Domain mapping

Install WordPress.ORG software on Godaddy
Transfer your blog contents to Godaddy (Export – Import)
MAKE SURE THE EXPORT / IMPORT WORKED
You can then buy the off-site redirect and point to your new site.

Set the wordpress.com site to private if you use the redirect so you keep the ability to use the old name here – or you can delete the posts (or set them to Private or Password Protected) here and just leave a singe message “I have moved to” with a link to the new site (you don’t want to loose old viewers and Google hates duplicate content) – the off-site redirect is the best for search engines and keeping your visitors.

Thank you so much for your reply!

The problem I’m having is that I can’t log into my wordpress.org blog (theriskywhisk.com) in order to import my blog from wordpress.com (riskywhisk.wordpress.com). I have already pointed my nameservers to Godaddy. I can’t access the dashboard login on wordpress.org (theriskywhisk.com/wp-admin) in order to import my blog because the domain is parked by Automattic and I can’t figure out how to unpark/authorize it. The domain was purchased on wordpress.com. Do I need to transfer my domain to the registrar that I’m using as my host (move the domain name from wp.com to godaddy.com)?

This should help: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/

Page down to Update Name Servers and put in the proper Godaddy name-server information in.

It will take a while for the name to propagate across the internet – 6 to 72 hours.

This will show you your progress: http://www.whatsmydns.net/

Godaddy should be able to give you the information required to access your site before the name-servers change.

You do not need to transfer the Domain name anywhere. Just change where it is pointed to.

This should get you a little farther down the path – on the good side the timing is not the issue so much as you are moving to a new domain name so the old WordPress.COM site can just sit where it is at.

Good luck – get the steps in the right order and patience grasshopper!

Thanks again for the help!

I changed the nameservers on my domain manager on wordpress.com and my hosting manager on godaddy.com 4 days ago.

Thank you for the info on whatsmydns.net! Fortunately, the nameservers are all ready to go, I just don’t know how to get Automattic to unpark/activate my page so I can access it.

Staff is prudent at this point.

If things are correct at Godaddy then when you change the name-servers to your Godaddy site then it should not matter what Autommattic is doing since the name-servers no longer point to them and your address will point to your Godaddy site.

The staff here is great

I’m 99% sure I’ve goofed something up…I just can’t figure out what! I really appreciate all the help! I’ve messaged wordpress support. I’ll see what they say!

Thank you both again!!

According to a whois on theriskywhisk.com that domain name is still pointing at

NS01.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
NS02.DOMAINCONTROL.COM

Go back to your wordpress.COM domain management and double check that the nameservers entered there are the godaddy domain nameservers.

It does not take much to mix things up – a “.” (period) left out can stop a domain from working!

You are welcome and good luck

This is my message to the support team:

Here’s the response I got from them:

Hi,

This guide explains how to transfer the domain name to another registrar.

Domain Management

Thank you.

Problem is I have only had my domain registered for 21 days. I can’t transfer it to another registrar for 39 more days. I’ve already directed traffic to go to that domain, and I want to at least get started on my self-hosted website. 39 days is a long time to wait!

Staff here usually has a better batting average – you don’t need (or want) to transfer the Domain Registration to another Registrar – you just want to host on Godaddy and keep your Registration of your name at WordPress.COM – that is one of the standard options available, WordPress.COM has that option so if you have domain mapping to a WordPress.COM blog and decide to move your blog off the WordPress.COM site you can just change the name servers – it is covered in one of the guides.

In looking at things from the limited view I can see things should be working – but I guess I would ask both Godaddy and the Staff here for help again – there could be some issue at Godaddy or there could be some glitch here – reference this Forum thread in your request for help.

When I moved a site here I had the name on an outside registrar – pointed the name servers to a site on my old host then when that worked I pointed the name servers to my WordPress.COM site and it just moved – the name is still registered at the same place despite the fact that the name pointed to three different sites in about a week.
