Unrealistic number of hits in just a few minutes.
-
One of my articles is receiving an astounding number of hits in a very short period of time. Stats log shows one visitor and at last check, 218 views. I’m concerned that something is wrong– anyone else experience this? I like my stats to be legit and this is too weird.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There are now 473 hits on this one article and still going. It appears to be originating from a Yahoo image search link.

That sounds to me like legitimate viral traffic. You probably hit the front page of Yahoo for some image. I wouldn’t worry, WP.com blogs can stand a lot more traffic than that. One of them got 145 million hits in two days and didn’t go down.

I emailed Yahoo… let’s see if I can get a response. I also hope that someone at WordPress can sever the link or do something to make it stop asap. These don’t appear to be real hits and that bothers me… my stats should reflect reality.

I was thrilled to be contacted by Automattic. They said, “This has happened to a few of our users, and our systems team traced it to an Internet Explorer toolbar called FunWebProducts. When a person using the toolbar visits your page, any image from Yahoo on your page generates a spike in automated visits. It’s not spam or anything malicious on your own computer or your blog.”
Even so, I have nearly 7000 hits since yesterday. This has made it difficult to see my real statistics. If anyone knows how to stop this, please let me know. I am not okay with this happening.

I feel like I’m in Bizarro World… how are they real? Thanks for helping me through this.
