Unreasonable number of responses from blog readers

I received over 40,000 in a few hours. I scanned my computers for spies and viruses with a negative result. Is this a hacking into WordPress?

Can you tell us what you received, more precisely? Was it emails or something else? The blog you linked to has no content, so it’s unlikely that it was views on that site.

No, it was not emails. It was comments based on a blog I have, hosted by bluehost. I have 45 posts, one of which is entitled A if not the Most Mispronounced Word in the English Language. My blog post is johnwridley.us. The blog is up and live as of a few minutes ago and now has more that 55,000 comments related to that one post referenced here. I do not have that problem with any other post. I have tried to add CAPTCHA and am frustrated by the inability to post a new blog or to approve any legitimate comments. As you can see, there are 55,000 or more pending comments and I have deleted several thousand.
The following is one of the sites that shows up in ads on my page when I receive these non-comments.

Sounds like you actually need help for a WordPress powered site, not a site hosted at WordPress.com. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are a little separate, and that can be confusing.
You’ll want to use the forums at https://wordpress.org/support/ for any support on managing your site. Hope that helps to point you in the right direction!

For Akismet issues, have you tried configuring the plugin to prevent spam? https://akismet.com/support/
This support can to some extent advise with Akismet, since it uses a WordPress.com login.
