Unseen blog visitors and bots

I recently migrated 3 blogs I own from Blogger to WordPress, because I had experienced problems with some strange visitors on Blogger. First of all, these visitors were shown in my Statcounter logs deliberately making it appear as if they were editing posts and widgets on the blog. Once they had got tired of that, all I saw was a visitor who showed up in the Blogger stats only (not in Statcounter) who viewed every post immediately (at all hours of the day or night) and found new blogs – even those created using different IDs and names – as soon as they they came into existence.

I have not been able to find out what has been going. Everyone tells me that this obsessive visitor must actually be a bot and – despite the fact that from observing variations in this visitor’s behaviour, I doubt it – maybe it is! I will probably never know!

Anyway, I have migrated my blogs to WordPress now to see if I fare better here. This was partly because I have some reason to believe that Google may have some involvement in the problems I have been experiencing (although it seems impossible to get help from Google if you have a slightly unusual problem!)

My problem now is that here on WordPress it seems that the bots and other visitors who manage to avoid Statcounter are not shown at all. I thought at first that this would be a good thing…. but instead, I find myself still really worrying about whether my strange visitor is lurking somewhere in the background! :-(

I presume there is no way that I can find out?

    Hello –

    Welcome to WordPress.com!

What you’re experiencing is perfectly normal. Not all bots are nefarious – they index the pages so that people can find sites they’re looking for. If you want to learn more about search engines and your privacy options with them, look over this link:

    Hello,

I have a similar question. Yesterday evening I posted one of my blog entries to the board of a big German weekly newspaper. When I got up this morning, I suddenly had 100 clicks. My best result so far was 65 clicks for a whole day.

(How) can I figure out whether these clicks are “real” or bots? My link at the board was not active, meaning you cannot click it, but have to copy it into your browser. Are bots able to read the link anyhow?

    Cheers
    N

    Hello @zebralogs

I can’t say for sure, but I’d guess that the visitors are real. If you look at the breakdown by country for where the visitors are coming from, the majority on that post are coming from Germany. Based on that, I’d say they are real people who have come to your site based on the board post you made.
