Unspecified billing for $18 this month – what is that for? Can I get that service cancelled and a refund?

Hi: This was a user account I set up while learning how to wireframe and plan a site for a potential customer. The site and account has not been used. I do see that in 2020 we were able to get a refund of the annual charge (of $240)–all good. But today I see I was charged $18 by WordPress to my Visa card. Where is that charge coming from? Is it this or some other WordPress account? There is no description just the text ‘WORDPRESS [redacted]’ … and that’s it. The charge is dated July 4 and is hitting my Visa card ending in [redacted], which I see is on record on this user account and on none of my other two logins. Is it a domain charge? I would like to discuss reversing this fee once I understand what it is for…There should be no further charges associated with this account. We can discuss removing this site and closing this account, if that is required. Thanks so much in advance– Craig Charnley.

  • Hi Craig, we’re happy to help you sort this out.

That charge is indeed related to a domain:
    ik-spa.com

Is that yours through another account?

We aren’t in a call center, so I removed your phone number so no one will call you pretending to be us, then noticed the other more personal details and removed those as well.

Hi: This was for the same client (of mine), unsure if there was another login; I think I secured the domain name for that client. Let me see if they are using it and I will cancel if it is not being used. I must have not noticed it the past two years, as we began that journey in 2018 I believe. Thanks for cleaning my message of personal data–I did not see that that was going to post to a public space until after I had sent it … Maybe we could add a direct channel for paying customers to reach out, with security and/or confidentiality, to the support team? Especially for financial matters, that seems like a user need you might want to support…if pleasing the customer is one of your goals. And thanks for researching that site name; let me look into and I will let you know what I would like to do. Is this the only place to send an email or a message to billing dept for WP, if indeed cancelling that subscription or name is what I would like to pursue?

  • Hi there,

Maybe we could add a direct channel for paying customers to reach out, with security and/or confidentiality, to the support team? Especially for financial matters, that seems like a user need you might want to support…

To clarify, we do offer private priority support to customers if they have an upgrade under their account. In this case the reason you were routed to our public forums is because this specific account you are contacting us under does not have an upgrade associated with it. https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/

Apologies if you were unaware of this routing when sending in your request.

Is it possible you have another login with us that the domain ik-spa.com is under? Possibly an account you created but handed off to your client at the end of the project? If so you can have them contact us at this link and we will be happy to assist them in managing the upgrade (however they wish to proceed) and they will be correctly routed to private support: https://wordpress.com/help/contact

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi: I am reaching out to the person who is benefitting from that domain name–I am asking them if they want to continue to use it. If they do, is there a way for us to switch the billing to their card? Or for you to remove my card from the record, in case they don’t get back to me…? I’d rather not just reverse the charge through my bank as an unapproved, but prefer we find a resolution as a subscription that I no longer use. Your input is appreciated– Thanks in advance

  • Hello there,

It’s possible to transfer domains across accounts as seen here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-a-domain-to-another-wordpress-com-account/

It would be up for the domain owner to initiate this transfer.

Hi: I am interested in cancelling the hosting of this domain: ik-spa.com and request a refund of this year’s (2022) recently charged subscription fee to my credit card on file (with WordPress).

I have found correspondence from the owner–a business client of mine–who requested in 2018 that I take the site down.

I went looking through my three known wordpress account names (sedumhouseadmin, iinnerknowledge21dayprayer, and watmoughmediadeveloperpage) and I cannot find record in any of these that my credit card was billed in their “billing” sections for the $18 annual domain name hosting charge associated with “ik-spa.com.”

Here is what I wrote in the forum using one of those other usernames, today. If you can tell me that wordpress can refund me the 2022 charge for $18 and free the domain name, that would be great. There is no other user or owner that cares to take over the registration. If you cannot, I am going to have to challenge the charge with my bank, and ask them to refuse the charge of $18 made recently for the annual renewal–I did not notice that this charge was taking place each year or I would have canceled it in 2020 when I stopped the paid subscription to this account (photo attached)

Here is what I wrote the support blog under my other username, today, Monday, August 8, 2022, requesting the $18 refund:

“I cannot find which of my accounts under which I am being billed for the domain name: https://ik-spa.com, but I am paying $18/month on my credit card on file, and I cannot find which wordpress site has ownership of the domain–I set up an account for a client and then they took over the design and posting of the site. My purchase of the domain rights in 2018 was originally only for 1 year but I continue to be charged, even after removing what I thought was the only recurring charge of $48 annual subscription (in 2020) from another wordpress username that I have used for this work, (email visible only to moderators and staff) I have been corresponding on this issue with customer service via the forum because I had canceled the paid subscription account. Please cancel this domain name and refund my $18 for this year’s renewal. I have heard from the original site owner that she wanted me to take it down in 2018. If you do not refund the $18 to my billed VISA card I will challenge the charge with my bank and seek a refund, that way. I am writing this on Mon. Aug. 8, 2022, and your team and I have been trading correspondence about how to transfer or close a domain since I first discovered the annually recurring $18 charge this month. Thanks in advance for your assistance–Craig C.”

Here is a file path to the screenshots of my charges from wordpress when I subscribed (@$48/year) and then cancelled that subscription, and the two recent annual charges from my bank (for 2021 and 2022) from WordPress for this un-needed domain registration:

    [redacting this]

Can you inform me as to how to refund the $18 charge for this year, and then close the registration of the domain? I will tell my bank to reverse charges for this un-necessary and unknown charge that I have been paying for 3 years (this will be the 4th year). I only found my client’s email request to remove the site (sent in Dec. 2018) recently, and I did not know that I was continuing to pay for this domain registration. It is no longer needed and I have been overcharged for maintaining it.

I cannot find what wordpress account it may have been associated to, but have also reached out to a developer who did work with the client and built what you do see at that http address (ik-spa.com).

Thanks in advance for your work on this–

    Craig C, San Francisco

  • Hi Craig, thanks for this. The multiple accounts can get a bit confusing!

You have a transaction ID in the screenshots (which we redacted). You can use that latest one to regain access to the correct account and cancel the domain.

    Here’s how:
    https://wordpress.com/support/account-recovery/#account-recovery-form

Or, you can also contact billing directly as we mentioned in your thread from your other username. I hope this helps!
