Unstoppable tour

  • Unknown's avatar

    My computer updated Windows.

Now I can’t keep the Post tabs for things like categories/tags open. They reset every time I return to WordPress.

Worse–every time I open a blog post (published or draft), it asks me to take the WordPress tour. I have hit the “X”, I’ve said No Thanks, I’ve done the tour three times…no matter what, I have to deal with that EVERY time I am opening my blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Usually when an issue like this occurs, it can be traced to an expired (or broken) login auth cookie stored on your local web browser. It looks like you are using Google Chrome as your browser, so with this in mind I would like you to try the following

    – clear your cache and cookies based on the steps google recommends here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050
    – Also make sure you are not blocking any “3rd party cookies” as explained in that guide as well.
    – If you continue to have loading issues after completing those steps, I would like you to try another browser instead, like Firefox. Are you able to proceed if you use a browser other than Chrome?

    Thanks for the additional info!

This took place using Edge. I tried Chrome–same issue is occurring.
I had cleared the cache and cookies previously.
I do not show 3rd Party cookies blocked anywhere in my settings–and this is ONLY happening with WordPress and no other websites.

I do know Microsoft had an update issue which forced me to have to reinstall Windows. The WordPress issue only started at that point. I suspect they are related–i just don’t know how.

  • Hi there,

Can you try with Firefox as well? Chrome and Edge are essentially the same browser, as they’re powered by the same technology under the hood; they just have different skins. So if this issue doesn’t happen in Firefox, we’ll know it’s specific to Chromium-based browsers.

I’m not sure how a Windows reinstall could cause something like this, though I agree the timing is suspicious.

Can you also reboot your modem/router by unplugging it for a few seconds? It’s less likely than cookies, but I wonder if an issue in the connection cache might be blocking a network call involved with setting the cookies somehow. Unplugging the router will clear it’s local cache.

If that’s the case, using a different internet connection might also work.

I downloaded Firefox. The same issue occurred with the tags/categories, etc, all starting as closed/concealed. I opened a couple–then closed WordPress. I reopened WordPress, went to the same blog draft, and the two sections were again in closed/concealed position.

I did NOT get asked about a tour (though I wasn’t asked when I opened Edge earlier this morning either).

I will try the reboot with the modem later…but I am skeptical–this problem has occurred whether I am at home or on the road (I use a laptop rather than a desk computer)

Thanks for clarifying what computer you’re using – the more testing we do, the more it seems like it is an issue with your Windows installation – especially since the problems started up right after the update. What version of Windows are you using?

Do you also use Microsoft Defender? If so, check that app’s settings to see if the update activated “app and browser controls” to clear cookies of any kind after a period of time or something else that would be impacting things.

    Thanks!

    I am using: Windows 10 Home, v. 10.0.19044, Build 19044.

    Reputation based Defender–turned off.
ALl other protection settings are set for “default”

The only other thing turned off is in the General category under Change privacy options–the toggle for advertising/ID is turned off.

Thanks for that! You’ve been very helpful while we tried to figure this out.

I had some colleagues using the same version of Windows test things in both Chrome and Firefox, and they could not replicate the issue.

Unfortunately, that’s making it seem more and more likely that the issue is on your computer specifically. So I’m not sure if it’s possible, but I would try reinstalling that update and see if that has any impact.

Otherwise, I think we might be at a loss here as we cannot replicate the problem in question. :(

Understood. So–if that fails to make a difference, what theN?

Do I just have to live with it?

  • Hello again :)

A few hours ago someone on our end was able to replicate the issue, so we know it’s not just you. In fact, it looks like this might be connected to a recent change in the editor made over on WordPress.org.

So we’ll continue investigating this on our end and will let you know if we need any more information from you. That does mean for now you’ll have to live with it for a bit, but hopefully not too long.

    Yay??

Actually I’m really glad it isn’t me somehow screwing up my computer.

Will you guys notify me once it is figured out? It is always easier knowing a solution’s coming. …or will I just have to wait until it magically is fixed without a head’s up?

  • I’ve reported the issue internally, and am following the conversation, so will do my best to keep you updated on any progress.

Thank you for being so understanding about this!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Great–thank you.

Understanding? Not a problem. Why get mad at a mistake…that doesn’t get things fixed. I’m glad I found something that was a real issue–so that it can be fixed for any/everyone else.

A few days/weeks…small potatoes. It’s actually been quite refreshing to see the speedy response from the WP tech peeps!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
Since it had been a week or so–I thought I’d ask if a solution had been found yet.

    Thanks guys.

  • Hi there,

Our developers are still working on a fix internally, but we will be sure to keep you in the loop once we receive any updates on this.

    Thanks again!
