Unsuitable Advertisement
-
Is there a way I can control which ads pop up on blogging site? Recently a friend viewing it in South Africa had ads for Viagra appearing. I understand the need for advertising to keep Word Press sites free, but is there a way to control which ads appear? I assume WordPress is not advertising Viagra?? I find it quite annoying because this particular product literally has no connection with my blog content. Or me, for that matter! Many thanks,

Hi there,
We have no direct control over which ads show on your site. We use a variety of ad networks through which advertisers bid in real time on ad space on your site whenever someone loads it in their browser.
What ads someone sees in on your site depends on factors like their location, and whether or not they opted in to tracking cookies, which would determine whether they see generic ads, or targeted ads based on their browser history.
So if someone is seeing ads for Viagra it’s because the advertisers bidding on ad space on the site thinks that ad is relevant to that person, or else it’s a generic ad just showing based on their location.
If they feel the ad is inappropriate, they can click the Report this ad link that appearse below every ad to submit it to the ad network for review.

Thank you for your feedback, much appreciated! I will refer the link above to my reader. I suspect their location has a lot to do with it but if they choose to report it because it offends, then perhaps they won’t see it again, with luck! Many thanks, once again.

You are welcome. It’s also helpful to understand how and why ads are served to someone – it’s based on their unique browser history. If I do a couple searches for shoes, I will start to see ads about shoes. Does that make sense?
