Unwanted ads appearing on my blog page!
-
I have no ads on my blog. I don’t want any. But my father-in-law, who lives 300 miles away so it’s not possible for me to see his monitor, says he has adverts coming up between my blog posts. From what he says, they all say ‘Ads by Google’ and some even have pictures. Has anyone any idea what is causing this? One of the reasons I use WordPress is that they don’t allow ads. Is this something I have done, or is it a bug?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you do a forum search or search of the Support documents, you’ll see that WordPress.com itself runs Adsense on our blogs. The way to get rid of this is to buy the No Ads upgrade.
WordPress does not allow blogger-initiated paid ads except under the Ad Control program offered to blogs with 1000 or more hits a day. They DO run their own ads on our blogs; they are one of Adsense’s biggest customers, actually.

The self hosted wordpress is even better, and has many more features than this version, and many more tweaks. If the ads bother you, I suggest you use the self hosted version.
However your site does not seem too commercial at all, and I could not see any 3rd party ads on the page, so you should be ok. -
What are you talking about? If you’re signed in to WordPress.com you won’t see the ads.
Independent WordPress is a good solution for many people, but getting the No Ads upgrade is far cheaper than getting hosting, not to mention you don’t need any technical skills with php or whatever.

Thanks for that. I’ve upgraded. Hopefully the ads have gone. From what I was told, the ads were very variable. If you visited the blog again one minute later they had changed. My big concern is that an inappropriate ad might show.
-
@melbournenews, the extra technical needs to run a self-hosted blog and keep it safe, updated and running smoothly is not something everyone has, or wants to learn. Here, all they really have to worry about is blogging, and for some that is the most important thing.

True.
So ads don’t display to any wordpress user if signed in? That would explain me not seeing any. But I still don’t recall seeing ads when not signed in. I will keep an eye out next time.

Generally the ads will only (occasionally as wordpress says) appear for people that come from a search engine.

All Google ads are safe for all ages, it’s against the rules to have an “inappropriate” ad, so you won’t have to ever worry about that. When people submit an ad through Google Adwords, the ad must be processed first before it is out to the world. Google would never let that happen.
Like melbournenews had said, it is much better to get a self hosted blog from a fairly affordable web hosting company at around $5 bucks a month. A lot more customizable, you can supply your own ads if you would like. Meaning you will get paid when someone clicks those ads. This site supplies ads on everyones website to keep it up and running.
The only bad thing about self hosted is that bots like to post spam messages in comments. On my self hosted blog, I posted a really good working tutorial on how to stop spam bots. Since I posted that, and installed what I needed I have only gotten about 2 spam posts from 10 a day!

Not exactly correct: lots of XXX ads slip through the cracks. You can report them, of course, and then they’ll be removed. I’ve seen it myself. Not to mention racist ads, etc.
You also don’t get paid by Adsense until you’ve earned $100 or more. That typically takes six months to a year.

I have a client who gets about 5k hits per month and runs adsense. She has never made enough to cover her hosting and domain registration fees although it helps.
And I agree with Raincoaster. They slip through all the time.
