Unwanted Disabling of Comments
-
I currently have the “Allow people to post comments on new articles” box checked in the Discussion settings, but from time to time, comments will randomly be disabled for a few posts I put up. Is there a reason this is happening? Are there other factors that influence whether or not comments are disabled for a post? No one that posts on our site is disabling them individually.

All WordPress blogs have comments open on all pages and all posts by default. Blogger need to take action in order to close theme and over the course of 9 years of answering questions here I have never heard of what you describe happening spontaneously.
You can enable and disable comments on free hosted WordPress.com blogs on this page > Settings > Discussion Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.

You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules
