Unwanted Google Ads Appearing on WordPress

All of a sudden, Google Ads for various products have started appearing in all of my posts. This hasn’t happened before and I did NOT sign up for any service or plug-in. The advertising that is appearing is in every post on my blog – this seems much in excess of WordPress’s commitment to keep advertising limited. Also, would ads placed by WordPress show up as “Ads by Google”?
It seems like there is some technical problem here. I saw the option to sign up for ad-free service, but I wondered if anyone is else having this problem, or have any suggestion?

Well, yes, ads showing up on wordpress.com blogs would be from Google (If I remember correctly). It may be a glitch, but try again in a few hours or days, maybe the ads will leave.
If you’re not on wordpress.com, you probably should go to whoever your hosting is, and deal with them, as we can’t help you.

The ads are gone now, so I guess this is a one-time thing? Very strange.

Not at a l strange. wordpress.com has been occasionally showing Google Adsense ads on our blogs for a couple of years or more now. If you type “adsense” into the support documentation searchbox you will find:

I’m willing to upgrade, but I do want to note that many of the “services” listed in those advertisements, at least the ones that appeared on my blog (http://precur.wordpress.com/) this morning, are to for-profit sites that traffic in pirated content of copyrighted material. I would very much like to keep these advertisements off of my blog, as I’m averse to running advertising in general and this kind of advertising in particular, but I am curious if WordPress has ever spoken to Google about the fact that their advertisers promote illegal activity and recommending that they pursue some kind of screening process?
