Unwanted links from my posts, not of my choosing

What on earth is this new problem, where I use a simple word like “career” or “polar” in my posts, and you people automatically create a link from that word to some website that has nothing whatever to do with my blog. Is this hijacking something that you are starting to allow?

Please stop it, or tell me how to stop it. The idea is to get more traffic, not alienate the traffic I have.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This in the past, has typically been caused by some sort of malware, or perhaps an add-on or plugin that was quietly slipped into your browser. To check this, look at your site with a different browser. If no links are showing in that browser, then open the other browser and start looking for an add-on or plugin that you did not personally install.

Also, do a complete virus and malware scan of your computer and make sure your virus and malware programs and their definition files are up to date.

Hi, thank you. I didn’t realize I was speaking to a forum, I thought I was kvetching at wordpress, hence my unduly assertive manner.

As for a complete virus and malware scan of my computer, is this something I can do for myself, or maybe take it to Office Depot where they have a service like that.

I really don’t know how to look for plugins or addons, I don’t know what they look like. I do use the safety feature of my Explorer browers regularly to delete cookies etc.

Thanks again, especially for your very quick answer.

Yes, you can take it back to where you bought it, especially if it is still under warranty, but Office Depot I don’t think has any computer support people.

You might try googling the make and model of your computer, or go the manufacturer’s website and see if they have a support page and then search for how to do a scan, or check for add-ons and plugins. If your computer is still under warranty, you can try contacting the manufacturer for help in eliminating the add-on or plugin and on how to do scans.

You could also check to see if there is a computer repair place near you that could help.

Office Depot will overcharge you for that.

Usually this comes from a browser add-on, so we recommend disabling them all, checking the blog, re-enabling one add-on, checking the blog again, etc, etc, etc. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15484/disable-third-party-extensions-in-internet-explorer/

@raincoaster, why didn’t I think of googling? Perhaps I need to go to bed – or I’m rusty after being away from the forums for 3+ months. :)

It’s a problem that has arisen while you were gone. I’m just used to it, that’s all.

Yeah, I’m slowly getting up to speed again. Thanks for chiming in.

Hello to all who posted your suggestions. I followed them this morning and my problem with unwanted links appears to have been solved.

I do appreciate your help with this, and apologise for the unfriendly words in my initial post. I’m a novice in computer things, thought the problem originated with wordpress, and had no idea my words would end up in a forum.

    Thanks again.

    Dave
