unwanted unfollows

  • Unknown's avatar

I was asked by ShawnajRoberts to start another help/issue thread.

okay so wordpress has a glitch somewhere, it automatically unfollows blogs that I am following, the issue is, I will click the follow button, either in the top left corner of the dashboard, or use the widget follow buttons if the blogger has one on their blog, the problem is wordpress will automatically unfollow, so I have to go back and re follow again and again, usually 2 or 3 times before it stays followed

Also the notifications seem a bit wonky, they seem a bit better today but are inconsistent, as of last friday I have had to manually check the notifications as it wasn’t showing any, it seems to be working today off and on .

as for the reader, it went crazy friday, I didn’t get any blogs on the reader that I was following, however what I did get was well over a couple hundred blogs ( one called 420) that were all about marijuana, I don’t read those blogs nor am I following any, I had to block each individual blog not once but twice because your block feature kept unblocking these blogs, I had to block them to clean out my reader. I haven’t had that problem since, I think it was a one time thing, at least I hope.

Now I realize you guys have been making upgrades to make wordpress more mobile friendly, but in doing so it seems to messed up the system for those of use that rely on desktops and laptops, could you look into this please? perhaps it is a simple programming error that was overlooked.

Now the last thing is, I would like to know the exact number of blogs I can follow per day ( as in clicking the follow button) , I would like to post that number on my blog so others know as I certainly do not want to get mistaken for a spammer, my blogging strategy is simple, I am trying to build a following in excess of 1000+ (over the course of a year or two) , if you click and follow my blog , I will in turn extend the courtesy and follow yours in return.

I also use the reader to find blogs of interest, sometimes the freshly pressed etc. , blogs are like newspapers, no one reads every single one every single day, they browse through their reader at the blogs they follow, if a post appeals to them they read it , if not they pass on that post. I have actually sat down on a sunday and read in excess of 400 blog posts, it can be done.

so it is important to me not to be labelled a spammer, or those that follow me, I do not want to break any rules here, and hope to blog here for many years to come , that is why I asked about the follow limit, is it a per day thing or weekly or monthly?

Thank you for looking into this stuff

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there! Thanks so much for opening a new thread. :)

I’m going to keep all the unrequested follows stuff over in the other one, but I wanted to make sure we had room to figure out what’s happening with your Reader/notifications and answer your questions about our automated spam detection.

Also the notifications seem a bit wonky, they seem a bit better today but are inconsistent, as of last friday I have had to manually check the notifications as it wasn’t showing any, it seems to be working today off and on.

That doesn’t sound good. Is this on a laptop that you move around with often? Or do you have several user profiles on your computer that you move between?

as for the reader, it went crazy friday

Was this in a tag search, or your personal Reader feed at https://wordpress.com? If it was in your personal feed, do you have any links to the sites that got added to your feed? That sounds suspicious.

Now I realize you guys have been making upgrades to make wordpress more mobile friendly, but in doing so it seems to messed up the system for those of use that rely on desktops and laptops, could you look into this please? perhaps it is a simple programming error that was overlooked.

Is there something specific you’re referring to here? The editor, or the sharing settings? Or the things you mentioned already?

I would like to know the exact number of blogs I can follow per day ( as in clicking the follow button) , I would like to post that number on my blog so others know as I certainly do not want to get mistaken for a spammer, my blogging strategy is simple, I am trying to build a following in excess of 1000+ (over the course of a year or two) , if you click and follow my blog , I will in turn extend the courtesy and follow yours in return.

If we told everyone where the line was, then spammers would know as well and it would defeat the purpose.

However, I’m happy to answer any other questions you have about our automatic spam detection. Is there something you’re concerned about happening if you like or follow too many sites?

I’m sure since you follow aopinionatedman you heard about the like and follow blocking we were experimenting with. We have backed off of that restriction for the time being because of the false positives we were getting. I can’t guarantee that you will never get caught by our spam detections, but Happiness Engineers are always here in the forums, live chat, and email to help if you’re mistakenly caught.

I primarily use the desktop pc, seldom the laptop, and when I do use the laptop it is only used in my house , as far as I am aware I only have the one user profile .

as for the reader, it happened in my personal reader feed, I never once have searched for anything related to marijuana, sadly no I never thought to grab a link, I was kind of shell shocked at the large amount of these unknown and unwanted blogs, this hasn’t happened again since I blocked every one of those blogs.

When I asked if it was a programming error, I was referring to the wonky notification area, and the unwanted auto unfollows, I was simply curious if it could be a simple programming error due to all the upgrades and tweaking wordpress has been doing lately .

Thank you for taking the time to look into all this, the notifications appear to be working ….so far , and I have gone through my list of people that I follow and that are following me, they all appear to be there today, though this will undoubtedly change and more unwanted automatic unfollows will occur.

Thanks for the info. When I was digging through your subscription logs for the unfollowing issues I did find a recent unsubscription from this site:

    https://420smokersblog.wordpress.com/

I believe this would be the source of the Reader issue. It looks like you subscribed to this site four months ago. They seem to post clumps of posts all at once rather than spreading them out, hence the deluge of posts in your Reader.

When I asked if it was a programming error, I was referring to the wonky notification area, and the unwanted auto unfollows, I was simply curious if it could be a simple programming error due to all the upgrades and tweaking wordpress has been doing lately .

Thanks for clarifying! :) So far, we’re not sure where the unsubscriptions are coming from. I’m still working with our developers to dig up what’s causing this.

The notifications are still being worked on, although there shouldn’t be the type of lag you describe. It sounds like you may have some connection issues. Between the notifications stalling and the unsubscription patterns I’m seeing your account logs, it looks like your browser isn’t updating in sync with our servers. One is going faster than the other and they’re not updating correctly.

I want to be clear that I am not saying that the random unfollowings is not a bug. Other user’s logs show a different pattern of unsubscription. Yours specifically happen within seconds of each other and toggle back and forth rapidly. So, it looks like the data between your computer and our servers are getting delayed somewhere along the way, so then your browser shows you following or not following when our servers show something different.

Do you have any issues on other sites with active notifications like Facebook or Twitter?

  • Unknown's avatar

no issues anywhere else, just here at wordpress, thank you for checking into everything, I will take steps to make sure that I don’t toggle between the main site and the notifications rapidly and see if that helps, I am running Google Chrome for a browser as it is secure .

again thank you , I will keep an eye on things and see how it goes , I will say though that over all wordpress is a great platform for blogging and socially interacting with people, I will be buying various upgrades in due time :)

Chrome is no more secure than any other browser.

  • Unknown's avatar

Less, unless you don’t count sharing with Google.

  • Unknown's avatar

well it’s better than explorer, in that sense it’s more secure. and it’s fast, I like that, firefox is good too .

  • Unknown's avatar

No IE11 is not less secure than Chrome, though it is not my preferred browser. Firefox rocks! You can download it here http://browsehappy.com or upgrade any browser version there.
