    Hi @vintage45,

Can I just check where you are seeing these ads. Are you seeing them when you are logged into your Facebook account?

When I move a post from wordpress to my Facebook account the ads pop up right underneath previous posts.

  • Hi there,

WordPress.com, like all websites you visit, places tracking cookies in your browser. Those cookies are used, among other things, to show you targeted advertising on other sites based on your web traffic. So if Facebook, for example, sees WordPress.com cookies in your browser, they’ll show you WordPress.com ads.

That’s how online advertising works. In the same way Facebook might show you Amazon ads for specific products if you viewed those products on Amazon just before visiting Facebook. We have no way to prevent you seeing those ads from our end, as we don’t control how and when Facebook displays them.

Facebook has an option that you can click on the arrow top-right of an ad and tell them you no longer want to see those types of ads. Apart from that the only way to prevent this from happening is to disable cookies in your browser, which will cause many sites, including WordPress.com, to stop working correctly. Or you can only browse the web in incognito/private mode or set your browser to automatically clear cookies every time you close it. But that will also cause you to be logged out of all accounts every time you close your browser.

Thanks for the info. Nothing in the right hand corner to delete these invasions. This is the first time in the almost six year history of my blog that this has happened. If it continued then it’s goodbye Facebook. At least Twitter allows you to dismiss unwanted intrusions.

  • You should be able to dismiss these in Facebook as well. All ads showing in my timeline there has the option, like this:

Facebook has been pushing ads into their timelines more regularly lately. Looking at my feed about every 4th post or so is a “sponsored post”. If you don’t see an option to hide it at all, you might want to reach out to their support about that.

I looked again and this time I did see a faded symbol in the upper right hand corner that allows me to hide the ad. I’ll keep doing that until those invasive jerks think of something else.
    Thanks again for you help.

  • You’re very welcome :)
