Unzip Previously Exported WordPress Blog File
-
I exported my blog to my computer and need help opening the zipped files.
-
Hi there,
On Windows, right click the .zip folder, and select Extract.
On a Mac, simply double-click the .zip folder.

Thanks, Kokkieh, but it didn’t work. There is no Extract selection when I right click on the zip folder. I have Windows 10. However, I think I unzipped it with Winzip. The document comes up with the words all together in no order and making no sense. There are no separate documents, as I expected there would be, and no way to separate the words, which make no sense anyway. Just a bunch of words thrown together. I appreciate your replying to my question.

Hi @youwerebornthatway, an import tool will make sense of all that. Are you trying to move your content from one WordPress.com site to another site we host and manage, or are you trying to move to your own, self-supported installation with a different host?
Let us know what you’re trying to do and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.

Hi Supernova, I’m trying to get the documents back in their original form to my PC, not to a web host. They told me at WordPress support that it’s impossible to do that. That I have to import it back to WordPress but my account is not supported by WordPress.com so I checked WordPress.org and it’s not there either. Thanks for your help.

I see. Well, depending on what their original form was, perhaps you can find an importer of sorts.
Two important notes:
1. If your site WAS an individual installation of the free WordPress software that you’ve now shut down, please consider contacting your host right away. The export files do not contain your images. They will only pull images off the host where they exist, and if you’ve removed your account, they’ll be gone. Many hosts will hang onto backups for a little while, so consider contacting them if the old site is shut down.
2. These are the forums for sites hosted at WordPress.com. It’s possible your export has things we don’t handle here (as you noted) so if you need further help, we recommend reaching out in the correct forum, at https://wordpress.org/support/ — you will need to create an account there.
Noting as well, if you’d like to import here but are having trouble with that, let us know and we’ll help how we can. It’s still important to be able to access the images at your old host, though, while you import, so please be sure that’s still up and running (or if it isn’t, try to get it restored.)
