Upcoming Events Displaying Incorrect Time

  • Unknown's avatar

On each page of my site, I have two upcoming events widgets: one in the sidebar on the right-hand side, the other in the main body of the page.

Recently, the widget in the body of the page has been displaying the time incorrectly. I verified the settings in iCal and everything is correct there. Furthermore, the sidebar widget is displaying the time correctly, and the events are duplicates of one another – so I don’t understand why one is behaving differently than the other.

After searching the problem, I verified my time-zone settings on the WP admin site, but everything is set correctly there.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

    The affected site is:

    MATH 123

Is there some way to actually submit a problem to WP support?

    Hi there,

No, it’s strange. If both are using the same calendar feed, the times should match.

Recently, the widget in the body of the page has been displaying the time incorrectly.

How long ago did the problem start?

After searching the problem, I verified my time-zone settings on the WP admin site, but everything is set correctly there.

Just to double check — do the timezones on your calendar and your site match?

One I know more, I’ll investigate what the problem might be.

No, it’s strange. If both are using the same calendar feed, the times should match.

One event is a duplicate of the other, listed in a separate calendar: screen shot

As you can see, both of them list the same starting time.

How long ago did the problem start?

I noticed it roughly 2 weeks ago.

Just to double check — do the timezones on your calendar and your site match?

Yes, they do. & all the other events list with the normal time. I’ve even tried deleting all the events, recreating them from scratch & still I get the same split behaviour: sidebar lists fine, body-widget is an hour behind.

Thank you very much for your help!

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the extra information!

I’ve been doing some testing and even when I use the same calendar URL in both the page and the widget, the times are still different — even though the data is coming from the same calendar.

I’m going to do some further testing and research. When I uncover what is going on, I’ll give you an update :)

In the meantime, let me know if anything changes.

    Thank you!

    Hi Gemma –

Yes – I had the same experience when I ran similar tests, which is why it is so confounding.

I will keep you posted if anything changes, and anxiously await any news from your end.

For the time being, I will simply list events in the page as an hour later; as such, please let me know if any changes are made that will affect the behaviour so that I can make the necessary corrections ASAP.

Thank you kindly for your help!

    Hi RA,

I did some further testing with a new calendar feed and times in both the page and widget matched. This leads me to think there could be a setting in the calendar feed causing the issue.

I visited your site today and noticed the times in your calendar feeds now match:

Are you still having problems or have you discovered what was causing the difference?

    Hi Gemma,

Thanks for the reply – still having the same issue. As I mentioned in my last post, I’m simply putting the time as one-hour later for the in-page feed until the issue is resolve as it was causing quite a bit of confusion.

A proper solution would be much appreciated: no idea why the calendar property would change suddenly for many but not all of the calendars … ?

    Best,

    RA

    Hi RA,

no idea why the calendar property would change suddenly for many but not all of the calendars … ?

As the calendar is only one hour out, can you check that the calendar matches the current daylight savings time? I just want to rule that out as a problem.

The current time for ‘MATH 123 Midterm Mastery Prep 1’, in the body of your page is displaying as 17:00. You have adjusted the time on the calendar to be one hour later, was the time displayed 16:00 (before you made this change)?

In the meantime, I’ll keep investigating!

I am using iCal.app on Mac OS 10.11.6 and am under the impression that it is not possible to set such preferences at all, let alone for individual calendars (nor, indeed, at all).

    Yes, exactly.

Thank you for your ongoing efforts!

Great, thanks for confirming. I’ll do a bit more digging and see what I can find :)

    Speak to you soon.

    Hi again,

I just wanted to drop in and give you a quick update. Our developers have been looking into this further and they think the problem is being caused by a mismatch in the widget and shortcode timezones — in the system, not your calendars.

I’ll be in touch again when I have another update!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Gemma!

Thanks for the continued updates. Glad to hear it’s not just something silly that I missed on my end. I really appreciate your help in resolving the issue. Looking forward to the next update :)

    Best,

    RA

Good news! Our developers have fixed this issue :)

There should no longer be a time mismatch — but do let me know if you notice any more odd behaviour.

    Hi Gemma,

Thanks for the update: I was away from office & then created new events but didn’t check right away (assuming it would definitely work if the developers worked on it themselves); however, the time mismatch is even larger now: an event scheduled in my calendar at 3pm is showing up as 9am in the upcoming events widget!

Please advise asap so I know whether to change all my events to 6h later or if it will be fixed :)

ps. based on the 6h, it seems as though the in-page widget is defaulting to GMT as I am at +6, I believe.

    Hi,

Oh no! I’ve mentioned this to the developers again, I’ll let you know what they say.

    Thanks for your patience.

    Hi again,

We’ve created another fix for this. I’ve double checked Math 123 and the times in both the shortcode and widget match.

M3-37A Sun Mar 12 is showing 14:00 – 15:50. Is this the expected time?
