Upcoming Events shortcode problem

  • Unknown's avatar

I have posted this problem in the forums but have gotten no help and am getting frustrated: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/upcoming-events-shortcode?replies=4#post-1324881

My site: http://uucolumbiaauction.wordpress.com … upcoming events is being used with a Google calendar.

    HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS:

I would like to stop the shortcode for upcoming-events from truncating the Description in unpredictable ways. (Theme: customized STAY). Right now I have the Description element hidden using CSS because the truncation is problematic. Truncation occurs at varying character lengths — I can’t even predict what the shortcode will do to the Description text. I would like to un-hide the Description field, but until I can get it all to display predictably it has to remain hidden.

I would also like a full list of parameters for the upcoming-events shortcode; the only one that’s documented is the “number” (of events to display) parameter.

Hi there, I’d be happy to help with this!

I would like to stop the shortcode for upcoming-events from truncating the Description in unpredictable ways.

I took a look at your upcoming events widget, and I see that the description for the Dominican Dinner is getting cut off in a strange way. (If you notice any other descriptions that are getting cut off, please let me know the event date/name so I can take a look at them, too.)

That isn’t the expected behavior for this widget or shortcode, so thank you for reporting it. I am checking to see if we can figure out why it is getting cut off, and I will let you know as soon as I have more information about this.

I would also like a full list of parameters for the upcoming-events shortcode; the only one that’s documented is the “number” (of events to display) parameter.

At this time, the only parameter for the upcoming events shortcode is the number of events to display.

Thank you so much for helping!!

PS — The Spanish Dinner also gets truncated, but not the Auction!! description. Remaining items, to date, don’t have Descriptions.

Ok, I heard back from my team — good news! They were able to fix it so that your event description isn’t truncated the way that it was before.

However, you may still see an extra space in the descriptions. For example, the Dominican Dinner description has an extra space in the word “newest.” This comes from Google Calendar’s side, so that will have to be fixed in your calendar itself. You may want to try creating the event again to see if that fixes it. Otherwise, you may have to contact Google for more information about the issue.

    I hope this helps! :)

Thank you! Much better. I hope this correspondence has helped others. I will look at the google calendar issue.

Followup regarding stray spaces in inappropriate locations — I’ve tried several times to eliminate the stray extra spaces in the upcoming-events description. I nearly always get them, even when deleting and adding a totally new event to the Google calendar. The same text yields inappropriate spaces in the same locations in the event descriptions, despite deleting and then re-inserting an event. I can’t glean a specific pattern of where these spaces are generated, just from eyeballing it.

There is no problem in the Google Calendar embed view — the only problem is in the shortcode results. I find nothing about this issue when surfing the forum or the web.

FYI, it makes no difference whether I add HTML tags to the description — the tags are appropriately stripped out, and the spaces appear in the same darn places. This leads me to believe that the additional spaces may be happening when WordPress processes the text. Are we totally sure that they are a Google Calendar problem?

Hi there, our developers confirmed that the problem does come from Google Calendar. Specifically, it comes from the way that Google Calendar creates the iCalendar feed used in the Upcoming Events shortcode.

If you are curious, you can get your iCalendar feed and open the file (ending in .ics) in a text editing program like Notepad to take a look at how it is formatted. The feed adds extra line breaks and spaces that aren’t there in the embedded calendar. Unfortunately, this feed is automatically created by Google, so there isn’t anything we can do to fix it on our end.

I’m sorry I couldn’t help more in this case, but I hope this explanation is useful!
