Upcoming Events widget inserts extras spaces at line breaks

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having problems formatting Google icalendar entries. I am using the Upcoming Events widget set up to obtain data from a Google iCalendar. The problem is that some of the words are split with extra spaces added in them. Even though the calendar entries display correctly when shown in the calendar, they don’t appear the same when shown on my web page.

The problem appears to be due to incorrectly handling new line breaks. Google is passing the data as hex ‘0D0A20’ (CR,LF,space) but the widget is not processing it correctly. It looks like Google is using that space to indent lines in the description field. The CRLF is stripped out by the widget formatting, but the space remains and gets inserted as part of the string.

Is there a workaround for this problem? Some kind of CSS magic I can use to strip
those extra spaces out of the words? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I had exactly the same problem…for over a year…at http://www.malanat.ca.

WordPress.com people were supportive and helpful. But they did NOT fix the problem. Because the problem is with the Google iCal input feed/Wordpress.com interface.

When I abandoned Google Calendar and created my own self-hosted *.ics files the Upcoming Events widget works perfectly.

And by the way those “random” spaces are not random at all.
