Upcoming Events Wrong Time

Please see my post on the forum at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/upcoming-events-widget-does-not-display-correct-time?replies=5#post-1491660

The google calendar and the timezone for http://kcps.org.nz/events are set for Auckland, New Zealand (GMT+13 at the moment). It used to work fine, and may have gone wrong when Daylight Savings Time kicked in at the end of September. As can be seen at that link, the events show up fine in a calendar widget, but are 11 hours earlier on the Upcoming Events display below it. For example, a meeting starting at 7:30 pm on the calendar starts at 8:30 am in the Upcoming Events list. Frustrating!

Correction – the times on the Upcoming Events display are actually 13 hours later, not 11 hours earlier. So a meeting starting at 7:30 pm on 28 October shows up as 8:30 am the next morning, 29 October.

    Hi there,

I’m sorry for the trouble you’re having with the Upcoming Events widget. We’ve had reports that the displayed time is wrong for recurring events in Google calendars, and our team is investigating the issue. Please stay tuned while we work on a fix for this. :)

The upcoming events widget has been fixed so that recurring events now display in the correct timezone. Sorry for the trouble!

Hi there – sorry, but this does NOT appear to have been fixed for my particular issues.

If you look at http://kcps.org.nz/events you will see that the meetings which are in the Calendar on 11 and 25 November still appear in Upcoming Events 13 hours later.

The Upcoming Events widget also shows (at the correct time now – thanks) Development Group meetings which have actually been deleted over our (southern hemisphere) summer so are not in the Google Calendar.

I can probably manually fix these issues by deleting all existing events and starting again, but before I do that you might want to check your systems please to see if these cases are able to be handled properly.

    Thanks.

Ah, I see a difference. The list of upcoming events at http://kcps.org.nz/events/ is actually displayed using a shortcode such as [upcomingevents] and not the widget that goes into a sidebar (which is what I was testing). Looks like the code needs to be updated for the shortcode separately, and I have passed a note about this along to our developers so they can take a look as soon as they have time to review this again.

    Hi there. Well, maybe….

But I think I am using the widget on the home page at http://kcps.org.nz – see left-hand sidebar – and it has the exactly the same problems still.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re right! My apologies.

I did spot check a few of the widgets that were using Google Calendar .ics files in their widget settings, and all the other ones I looked at were fixed when I checked, including my test blog. I jumped too quickly though, and it turns out files created with other calendar programs were still having trouble. And now it looks like your Google calendar file has something different than the others and I’m not sure why yet. It’s on a list to be reviewed again as soon as our developers can get to it. I’ll reply back here as soon as I have more information.

If it helps, I think some of these calendar items were created, or at least edited, using BusyCal on a Mac (OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion at the time) rather than using the web interface to Google Calendar. That could have created a difference?

  • Unknown's avatar

Aha, that indeed might explain some of the differences. I added that detail to the bug report that’s on file and waiting for review.

@neildgordon! The recurring events timezone issue should be fixed now! Can you check it out?

Aside: I’d be interested to know if the recurring events you create with BusyCal show up correctly now too.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks. @designsimply. I had deleted all the old events to clear everything out. I made some new ones.

Times of meetings look fine now. :-)

However, I just used BusyCal to create a recurring series of monthly meetings on the 3rd of each month from February to November 2014 inclusive. Then I adjusted them so they were the first Monday of the month instead. The display of upcoming events at http://kcps.org.nz/events/ has very strangely invented a new upcoming event on 3 January 2014 that doesn’t exist, skipped 3 February 2014 (why not that as well?), then resumed correctly with the series of meetings starting on 3 March.

The left sidebar widget at http://kcps.org.nz shows the same behaviour.

So, recurring meetings and/or BusyCal are still an issue with spurious extra events showing up. Times are right though.

Aha. Thanks for testing BusyCal! I’d like to look at the raw data for that one while it’s in action.

I’ll leave those entries there for now then.

We’ve made another update to the upcoming events widget.

I checked http://kcps.org.nz/events/ and I see “KCPS Development Group Meeting” showing up for the first Monday of each month starting in March 2014. The February one, however, is named differently as “KCPS First Meeting of Year” and I was wondering if you’ve edited that one and if the other recurrent events are showing up correctly now?

  • Unknown's avatar

That “KCPS First Meeting of Year” was a separate event – and not a repeating one. Everything looks good now. Thanks!
