upcomingevents widget/shortcode not working

    I’m trying to use a google calendar feed to display upcoming events. Embedding this calendar in a page works fine.

    I’m on a fresh install of WordPress 3.5.2, and I don’t see any ‘Upcoming Events’ in my available widgets.

    Why would this be? I’ve tried deactivating and activating all plugins. I’m working on a child theme based on a theme I bought from a shop. Could it have something to do with this? Can I manually re-install the widget?

    I tried using the [upcomingevents url="my google calendar ical url"] on a page, and this also didn’t work.

    I also tried the following. On the following documentation page about Upcoming Events, it says you can add a mini calendar as a text widget with a shortcode. It says that the shortcode is automatically generated in the visual editor when you add the iframe to the page. Unfortunately, I see a yellow stand-in box instead of the shortcode. I tried to manually reproduce the shortcode listed in the support page’s screenshot as follows:

    [googleapps domain="www" dir="calendar/embed" query="mycalendarhere%40gmail.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles" height="600" width="800" /]

    but that also didn’t work.

    I’m beginning to get the feeling that the following documentation page on Upcoming Events is deprecated.

    Ah, so maybe these shortcodes are only available to wordpress.com hosted blogs. This was confusing to this first-time theme developer. I’ll probably find one of the plugins that adds this functionality.
