Update and Backup Assistance Request

  • Unknown's avatar

My WordPress site, https://theenvironmentblog.com, indicates to me that my theme, which is Twenty Seventeen, needs to be updated to the theme Twenty Twenty (I have version 1.2 installed, and version 1.3 is called for).

My site also indicates to me that I should consider backing up the site before I make changes related to a theme or to plugins. A banner for the Jetpack app runs across the top of the ‘Updates’ section screen, and has a ‘Get Backups’ button that is clickable. I clicked the ‘Get Backups’ button and was taken to a Jetpack website.

I was prepared to pay for Jetpack to link a backup entity with my WordPress website, but the billing currency was Euros. I must pay in dollars.

The prompt for a payment in Euros leads me to believe that my website somehow is associated with the European Union (EU); my site being associated with the EU is possible because I started, developed, and made go live on the Internet my WordPress website while I was visiting Europe. Of course, I would like for my website to exclusively and entirely be associated with the United States.

Consequently, I need assistance with at least three things, which are below.

    1. I need to know whether or not I should update the theme of my website, and if I should update the theme, how I should perform the update.

    2. I need to know whether or not I should back up my website, and if I should back up my website, how I should perform the backup, and whether or not I should employ Jetpack in order to perform a backup of my website.

    3. I need to ensure that my WordPress website is exclusively and entirely associated with the United States, and not with the European Union (EU) or any other national or geographic entity other than the United States.

If you are willing and in a position to assist me with the three things that are mentioned above, it will be very helpful to me, and I will be very grateful.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

  • Hi, I’ve switched the currency for you to USD. I do recommend having some kind of backups in place and keeping everything up to date.

Going forward, you’ll also want to use the correct forums for self-managed installations, at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Or, you’d be welcome to migrate your site to our services. You can find our pricing here. It’s fairly similar to Jetpack’s pricing, and we manage updates for you:
    https://wordpress.com/pricing

We have a bit more info on that here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    I hope this helps!

    Dear Supernovia,

Thank you very much for your message, and for information that you provided in the message.

I’m very glad to know that currency for my WordPress website has been switched to USD.

Also, I didn’t know that I used an incorrect forum for posting the information and requests that I recently posted in the forum in which you responded to me; I posted my recent post in a forum in which I was instructed to post by a representative of WordPress that responded via email to me regarding an email that I had sent to WordPress regarding assistance with matters to which you attended in your response to my recent post. I’ll use the forum for which you sent to me a link in the future for information and/or assistance regarding self-managed installations.

As for migrating my website to your services, if I migrate my WordPress website to your services, would that mean that I would migrate my website to direct WordPress services (I gather that my WordPress website currently is hosted by BlueHost – am I correct here?)?

Also, if I were to migrate my website to your services, would my website change in any way or be different as far as any non-administrator viewer and/or user of the website were concerned?

    Thank you, again.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

  • As for migrating my website to your services, if I migrate my WordPress website to your services, would that mean that I would migrate my website to direct WordPress services (I gather that my WordPress website currently is hosted by BlueHost – am I correct here?)?

That would mean we become your hosting provider instead of Bluehost, yes. You’ll also be able to transfer your domain registration to us, but you could also leave the domain registered with Bluehost if you prefer.

Also, if I were to migrate my website to your services, would my website change in any way or be different as far as any non-administrator viewer and/or user of the website were concerned?

If you use the full-site migration option (requires our Business Plan) that transfers your entire site, including plugins and your theme, there shouldn’t be any difference, except that any users with dashboard access on your site will have to create their own free WordPress.com username accounts, if they don’t have those already.

    Dear Kokkieh,

Thank you for your message, and for information that you provided.

I gather that I can migrate my WordPress website to WordPress.com while still leaving the website’s domain registered with BlueHost, or migrate my WordPress website to WordPress.com while registering the website’s domain with WordPress.com. Is this correct?

I am happy to use the full-site migration option, which, as you mentioned, requires WordPress.com’s Business Plan, and register my website’s domain with WordPress.com as long as I know that these options are the best options for me.

My hope is that you’ll forgive the few questions that I would ask below, and any inquisitiveness that I demonstrate in this message greasing the full-site migration option – I’ve been happy with BlueHost, and like my WordPress website, and would not like to do anything that affects either the website’s place on the Internet or the website’s general look or feel.

    1. I examined the ‘Moving from a Self-Hosted WordPress to WordPress.com’ article for which you provided a link in your recent message to me, and I gather therefore that there are a few steps that I might have to take independently in order to adequately migrate my website. Is there an option for full-site migration that involves WordPress performing all migration actions, and that leaves me with little to nothing to do?

    2. Is there a link to a page with all relevant costs affiliated with WordPress.com’s Business Pan?

    3. It may sound strange, but I wonder why I had not, before your last message, been aware of the option of having WordPress.com host my site, and perform all updates and backups on my behalf and on my website’s behalf. Is this option comparatively new, or have I simply missed it since 2017?

    4. It may be labor-intensive, and place undue burden on you or whomever on your end responds to this message, but is there a means by which you or another individual might explain, piece by piece, how processes would go if I decided to take the full-site migration option from WordPress.com (this includes ‘parting ways’ with BlueHost, tying up all to-be-ended ends, and setting up billing and other matters that would ensure that hosting, maintenance, and other upkeep-related things having to do with my WordPress website are as labor-light and uncomplicated for me as possible)?

Thank you. I am interested in migrating my WordPress website to WordPress.com if making the migration would mean easy updates and backups, and also easy other forms of maintenance for me on my website.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

  • I gather that I can migrate my WordPress website to WordPress.com while still leaving the website’s domain registered with BlueHost, or migrate my WordPress website to WordPress.com while registering the website’s domain with WordPress.com. Is this correct?

    Yes, that is correct.
You can either map it – your domain will stay with the current registrar and you’ll need to go to their site to manage anything domain related.

Or you can transfer the domain to WordPress.com and we’ll be your new registrar. This way you’ll manage everything from one place and you’ll be able to reach support with any domain related-issues :)

Here you can find more information: https://wordpress.com/support/domain-mapping-vs-domain-transfer/

Is there an option for full-site migration that involves WordPress performing all migration actions, and that leaves me with little to nothing to do?

No, we do not provide a guided transfer service at the moment.

Is there a link to a page with all relevant costs affiliated with WordPress.com’s Business Pan?

You can see all the pricing information here:
    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

The domain mapping is free with any paid plan. If you decide to transfer the domain to WordPress.com, the transfer will be free and the price of the domain from the second year will depend on its extension (TLD):
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/

Is this option comparatively new, or have I simply missed it since 2017?

You have probably missed it :) It is a common confusion between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

is there a means by which you or another individual might explain, piece by piece, how processes would go if I decided to take the full-site migration option from WordPress.com (this includes ‘parting ways’ with BlueHost, tying up all to-be-ended ends, and setting up billing and other matters that would ensure that hosting, maintenance, and other upkeep-related things having to do with my WordPress website are as labor-light and uncomplicated for me as possible)?

This is probably less complicated than it sounds. You will want to contact Bluehost to learn more about their refund policy, to check if you are eligible for one if you cancel their subscription. Then you will want to move your site and cancel the subscription you have with them after everything has been transferred.

Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

    Dear fresatomica,

Thank you for your message, and for information that you provided in the message.

I’m interested in transferring the domain of the WordPress website that I have, and am interested in purchasing a Premium Business Plan from WordPress.com. Also, I would like all elements of the website that I have to be hasted, maintained, and otherwise run through WordPress.com.

I gather that the first reasonable step for me to take is to contact BlueHost, the current host of my website, and indicate to BlueHost that I would like to transfer the domain of my WordPress website to another host, WordPress.com – is this correct?

Additionally, and if you and/or anyone else on your end is willing and in a position, would you indicate to me any other necessary steps that I must take in order to swiftly and completely transfer my website’s domain, all content and other things that are related to my WordPress website, and any other thing that’s relate to my website to WordPress.com?

I would require only that all content that’s on my website, the general appearance and presentation of my website, and all other elements of my WordPress website that currently are parts of the website remain exactly as they are, and not change after a full transfer to WordPress.com. Is WordPress.com in a position to assure me of this?

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

  • I gather that the first reasonable step for me to take is to contact BlueHost, the current host of my website, and indicate to BlueHost that I would like to transfer the domain of my WordPress website to another host, WordPress.com – is this correct?

No. First you need to create a new site on WordPress.com at https://wordpress.com/start/site/

Then you’ll upgrade the site to our Business Plan, and follow the process explained at the link I gave before to transfer your site to us:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

That process will transfer your entire site, including the theme and plugins, to us. However, if you’re using any plugins that aren’t compatible with our setup on WordPress.com, those will not be transferred:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incompatible-plugins/

Only after that process is complete should you transfer the domain to us:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

If you start by transferring the domain, your Bluehost site will go offline as soon as the domain is no longer connected to it, and you won’t be able to log into it, nor will we be able to import it.

Once you’ve created a WordPress.com site and upgraded to the Business Plan, you’ll have access to live chat support where we can answer any further questions you have about the process in real time.

    Dear Kokkieh,

Thank you for your message, and for information that you provided in the message.

I will begin by creating a new website on WordPress.com, and will then upgrade to a WordPress Business Plan. Once the new website is in place, and a Business Plan purchased by me, I will begin processes associated with transferring my entire website to WordPress.com.

Also, I will follow all other procedures mentioned by you and associates of yours on your end, affiliated with WordPress.com in order to complete processes related to transferring my WordPress website to WordPress.com, ensuring that my entire website is hosted, supported, and maintained by WordPress.com, and ensuring that my website’s domain is transferred to WordPress.com, and that BlueHost no longer hosts my website.

If I have questions, and /or need or want additional information or assistance, I will contact you or an associate of yours at WordPress.com through this post thread or through live chat support.

    Thank you, again.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

    Dear Kokkieh,

Thank you, again for information that you recently provided to me regarding how I might migrate my entire WordPress website to WordPress.com; purchase a Business Plan from WordPress.com; transfer the domain of my website to WordPress.com; and ensure that WordPress.com will maintain my WordPress website through updates, backups, and other forms of maintenance.

You very clearly outlined steps that I must take in order to achieve things that are mentioned in the paragraph that is above this paragraph, and my hope is that my asking any additional questions in this message does not reflect due attention by me to your instructions.

I attempted today, 06/06, to fully migrate all elements of my WordPress website to WordPress.com using the link that you sent to me. The link is below.

    https://wordpress.com/start/site/

When I followed the link, I was prompted to start a new site, or enter the URL of an existing site. Next to a space for the URL there was an indication that if I entered the URL of my website and clicked in the affirmative then the domain of my website would be transferred to WordPress.com – I’m under the impression that I need to first fully migrate all elements of my website to WordPress.com using processes for option 1 in an article for which you sent me a link (the link is below), and then purchase a Business Plan from WordPress.com. Are these things correct?

    https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

Additionally, I’m under the impression that, after I fully migrate all elements of my website, and purchase a Business Plan, I must transfer the domain of my WordPress website to WordPress.com. In order to transfer the domain, I would need to contact the current host, BlueHost, of my website. Are these things correct?

In summary, I must take the steps, in numerical order, and starting with ‘1,’ that are below.

    1. Fully migrate my WordPress website to WordPress.com using processes in option 1 in the article for which there is a link below.

    https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

    2. Purchase a Business Plan from WordPress.com using the page for which there is a link below.

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

    3. Transfer the domain of my WordPress website from the current host, BlueHost, to WordPress.com using processes evident in the article for which there is a link below.

    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

Are these things correct, and have I left nothing important out?

Also, if there is any information regarding hiccups into which I might run throughout any of the three steps mentioned above, feel free to let me know of the information.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

  • Hi Justin,

You first need to create a new site and upgrade to the Business plan. Then you can start the migration process.

Once you have purchased the Business plan you’ll be able to contact us via live chat and we’ll guide you with the transfer in real-time.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear Fstat,

Thank you for your message. Contrary to previous messages of mine, I’ll be purchasing a ‘Premium’ plan from WordPress.com – I know that this likely will cancel out my ability to have a live chat with WordPress.com, and may mean that I migrate all elements of my website, http://theenvironmentblog.com, independently.

The processes of beginning a purchase of a new website on WordPress.com, and migrating elements of my existing WordPress website are hung up on prompts that I receive when I initiate the process of purchasing a new website through a ‘Premium’ plan from WordPress.com – in the ‘Give your site an address’ prompt, I’m offered an opportunity to place an existing URL in a bar, and when I place the existing URL in the bar, I then am prompted to verify that I already own the domain; I verify that I own the domain, and then the ‘Transfer your domain away from your current register’ prompt pops up.

When I click on the pink ‘Transfer to WordPress.com’ button, the next screen offers an opportunity to ‘Transfer’ with the click of another pink button – this seems to me to be final, and to my knowledge, before I transfer a domain, I need to ‘release’ the domain from my current register, BlueHost, or at least notify the register of a prospective release. I don’t want to damage my website, or lose data. Taking the next relevant and appropriate step is the hang up.

I know that I’ve sent multiple messages to WordPress.com regarding this ‘hang up,’ and I don’t mean to belabor any point, but if a next appropriate step can be indicated to me by a member of the WordPress.com team, it will help me.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

  • For the process of transferring a domain to us, we have some general steps at https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

Much of this process is started through the original domain registrar, and they all operate differently, so for some of these steps you’ll need to consult their documentation for specifics.

    Dear Macmanx,

Thank you for your message. I attempted to initiate a domain transfer with BlueHost, my current registrar, and BlueHost needed from me name servers from WordPress.com – I didn’t have name servers from WordPress.com. I gather that I would acquire the WordPress name servers from the ‘Domains’ page of WordPress.com. Is this correct?

Any input that you would offer would be helpful. I know that I’ve asked a lot of questions in this support thread – my intention is not exhaust the patience of you or any representatives of WordPress.com.

    Thank you, again.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz

  • Hi Justin!

my current registrar, and BlueHost needed from me name servers from WordPress.com

    You can find those here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/#change-your-domains-name-servers

    I hope that helps :)

    Dear Fresatomica,

Thank you for your message, and for information that you provided in the message.

I followed the link that you provided, and found the name servers in which I was interested. The name servers should prove to be helpful.

    Thank you, again.

    Sincerely,
    Justin Lentz
