Update Failed: -1 error

  • Unknown's avatar

Everytime I try to update some plugins (elementor & starters templates) WordPress gives me an error saying: Update Failed: -1

I have tried to search what the -1 error means, but can’t find any result.
Does anyone know why I cannot update my plugins (and other applications like the translation update)?

    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

has anyone had this error before?

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

Are you able to confirm the URL of the website that you need assistance with please?

I suspect there may be a server issue at stake here, with your hosting provider, so I want to be sure I can point you into the right direction.

    Hey,

Thank you for responding. This concerns the following URL: https://groenehub.org/

Hope this helps. Still haven’t been able to resolve the problem.

  • Hi there,

Unfortunately, we cannot assist because https://groenehub.org/ is not on WordPress.com but is a self-hosted WordPress.org site.

    To clarify:

    • WordPress.com is a managed host platform that offers WordPress in a pre-customized server environment already set up for you to build your site. Hosting with WordPress.com is free, and the server, security, updates, and site optimization are all handled by us. We offer free and paid plans that provide additional features for your site based on your needs (plugins, custom themes, etc). You can also access professional assistance via Happiness Engineers to address any issues you encounter.
    • WordPress.org is a self-hosted platform, meaning you download the WordPress software and install it on a web server from a host of your choosing (Go Daddy, Bluehost, Hostgator, etc.). You have to pay the host when you’re self-hosting, and the server, security, updates, and site optimization are all handled by you. This gives you more flexibility and control of your plugins, themes, and code but also more responsibility to ensure those things are operating correctly.

Our support page dives more into the differences:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

We welcome you to consider moving your site to WordPress.com, as we’d love to further help you. However, since you’re on a self-hosted platform, we do not have direct access to your account and, therefore can’t directly address your issue.

I recommend contacting your site host, as they would be better positioned to assist you since they have access to your account. Also, the open-source forum community is always available and prepared to help users with self-hosted sites:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/

    Hope this helps.

Hello there, I also have the same problem. I’m using Bluehost and Elementor Version 3.11.1, and also Crocoblock’s Jet Plugins.

The blog I need help with is: https://skaneando.cl/ (skaneando.com)

    Hi,

Sadly the WordPress forum staff is not available to help me because I’m not currently hosting through WP Hosting.

I tried searching the problem some more and eventually I logged into my hosting plan and found some errors regarding “CPU + I/O-usage resources limit was reached for your site”. (See image below).

Not entirely sure what is causing this, but this might be part of the problem. I tried contacting my hosting provider to ask how to resolve this program. But they still havent responded yet. So far the problem has not been resolved.

Also, the internet tells me I should deactivated all plugins and than activate them one by one to see what plugin might be causing this. Im very scared to try this, since my website goes offline for about 5/10 min everytime I try to update anything at all. I’m afraid I wont be able to reactivate plugins after I have temporarily deactivated them. Which would potentially disrupt my website completely.

@atoroladner If you find anything that works for you on resolving this problem, please let me/us know down below

Hey! Here is the solution that worked for me! Hope this helps for you too.

    WP
    Plugin Error “Update Failed -1”
    Started
I have multiple plugins way overdue for an update (WPForms, Site Kit and Starter Templates). They are on auto update, which isn’t working and any time I attempt to manually update them I just get the error message “update failed -1”. This is for https://nohassledogtraining.ca/

Wow, thank you so much. I will definitely be trying this out lter today.
They refer to ” Starter Templates” to be the cause.

Was this also the case for you @atoroladner ? Was it starter templates that caused the problem?

(Also still sad the WP Staff could refer me to the topic you recommended, thank you again)

I finally dared and tried to deactivated all plugins (accept my SSL). After that I could update each one of them individually while deactivated, including starters template. After that I could succesfully reactivate all plugins.

So this problem has been solved for now since everything is updated again.
Im sincerely hope that this was a one time thing….

  • @nlmaxis,

Glad that the suggestion worked for you! I have not seen anyone who initially had this issue have it again. But, if you do, as I mentioned in the other thread, deactivating the Starter Templates plugin should again do the trick.

    Thanks!
