Update MX records

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a site that is hosted elsewhere but the DNS is at WordPress. (Please forgive me if I mess up some of the terminology.) I am trying to set up email at my domain, and I got MX records from the webhost. They said I need to update the record at WordPress now, and I am trying to figure out how to do that.

One problem I am having is that when I click on My Site, it says “You don’t have any WordPress sites yet.” I thought maybe that means I was on WordPress.org instead, but I went to their forums and they confirmed that WordPress.com is the DNS provider. So how do I update the DNS using the MX records from the webhost?

OK, I have resolved the first issue. Now logged into the correct account so I do not get the message “You don’t have any WordPress sites yet.”

But I do not see a MySite link anymore. It looks like I am in a different interface. Where is the option to update MX record?

For some reason I can access [mydomain].com/admin while logged into the correct account, but those same credentials do not work to log in to the main WordPress.com site. Is there a reason for this? All I want is to log in and update the MX records.

OK, so those login credentials are (I think) for WordPress.org which I use to update my site. So what is my login for WordPress.com?

  • Hi there,

I’ve explained the accounts issue in https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/login-credentials-8/?view=all#post-3773400, so I’m just going to focus on the DNS here :)

Can you tell me the domain? The WordPress.com account you’re using to post here has never owned any domains with us, nor have you had any domains connected here that are registered somewhere else.

It’s possible you had the domain connected here via another account at some point, but if you’re currently hosting the domain somewhere else, there shouldn’t be any need to have your DNS hosted with us – that would mean you’re essentially pointing the domain to us, just to point it to someone else again.

So with the limited info I have, I think the simplest option would be to go to your domain provider, change the name servers from WordPress.com to point to your current hosting provider instead, and then you’ll be able to make any future DNS updates there directly, without us serving as a middle-man.

But if you can confirm the actual domain I’d be happy to double check that for you, so we can be sure this is the best course of action :)

Thank you so much for the reply. That does make sense. I was wondering why the domain is pointing to WordPress.com and it sounds like maybe there’s no good reason for it!

The domain is wendywisner.com. Do please let me know if there is any reason to point to WordPress.com, or if I should have my DNS hosted by my webhost instead.

  • Hello there,

The domain is wendywisner.com. Do please let me know if there is any reason to point to WordPress.com, or if I should have my DNS hosted by my webhost instead.

If this site is not hosted with WordPress.com, there wouldn’t be any reason for the DNS to be pointed toward WordPress.com.

    I hope this helps.
