Update status unknown

I just assumed admin responsibility for our youth wrestling club site. The WordPress admin dashboard said that I needed to update to a newer version to proceed. The site has been down for 3 hours now and I don’t know if it crashed or isn’t updating or if the update is just taking a really long time. Is this normal? Is there a way to check the status or progress of the update?

That said, I’ll do my best to help. When I visit http://www.stcewrestlingclub.net/ – I do see a site.
Can you tell me where the site is down please? For instance, is this in the Dashboard?

Appreciate the response. Yesterday afternoon the previous admin was able to update the site to the latest PHP version and brought it back up.
Now however as soon as I try to log in to the WP admin I get the internal server error.
