  What exactly do you mean by update? Here at WordPress.com updates happen behind the scenes automatically as necessary carried out by the Happiness engineers. Are you talking about a site hosted somewhere else? If you have a site here at WordPress.com and want to upgrade the plan then no existing content will be lost.
