Updating a media library item

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

Is there a way to upload a new version of an existing document into the Media Library? I’d like to do this with a PDF and don’t particularly want to have to search through my entire blog for every reference link to the file. I can’t find a way to do it without ending up with “filename1.pdf” (which means changing all the links).

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi. In order to assist you, we need the URL of your blog, starting with http:// please. Thanks.

I don’t think the URL makes the slightest bit of difference to such a general question… but it’s http://scrawlbug.com

    It does matter.
We need to know that you are using a WordPress.com blog.
Lots of people don’t know that there are 2 flavors of wp, and answers for .com don’t necessarily apply to .org.

Replacing files in the media library, if they have the same names as the original means that wp.com software will add a number to the copy. I don’t know of an automatic way to change files so they will update in your posts.

The problem stems from the original files being cached on servers, so when you add another file with the same name, wp renames them to avoid having different versions available all over the net.

If another volunteer has a better explanation, or idea about how to update posted files without having to change the links, I would be very interested.

Didn’t mean to sound ansy – was just surprised since the posting form asks for the URL anyway, so I assumed the question would go into a .com list rather than .org. Perhaps I expect too much from technology. ;)

So basically the answer is “no” unless there’s a sneaky workaround? Bummer.

Some days 30% of the questions are for.ORG installs, blogs that have been deleted, blogs that ask a Theme specific question (not all Themes work the same in all functions) – so to help prevent you from getting bad advice we ask about the site in question – if you have a .ORG install then what you want to do is real easy –

There is a half work around for what you want (sort of does what you want but the file names do change) – but it is still too early for me to make it coherent for you.

The feature is intentional: designed to prevent accidental overwrite. (Note: I’m not saying it’s deigned well.)

You won’t get the extra number only if you delete the file and re-upload it the next month. But then the date in the permalink will be different, so again you’ll need to change your links.

For files you know you will be updating, the only solution is to upload them to Fileden or other similar site.

    @spikethelobster

Nor did I mean to sound picky, but we volunteers don’t have access to that backend information when you enter a question in these forums. Even though you entered a URL, we can not see it unless it is in your question-post.

I was also thinking of other users who might read this thread, so that they would all realize that providing a live link, or connecting to their usernames, makes it much more efficient for getting answers here. Public forum and all.

Best wishes to you and if you felt singled out, I do apologize.
