Updating CNAME specifically to get mapped domain email working
-
I’ve been looking through the support pages for help on this but cannot find it.
I’ve bought the domain http://www.zombiesatemyxbox.com, and mapped it to http://zombiesatemyxbox.com. The mapping works fine, and to get the email working the MX records were put in:
MX 10 .MAILSTORE1.EUROPE.SECURESERVER.NET.
MX 1 SMTP.EUROPE.SECURESERVER.NET.However, email to (email visible only to moderators and staff) was still being failed.
I contacted my host, GoDaddy, who told me I needed to do the following:
Correct Settings:
0 smtp.europe.secureserver.net
10 mailstore1.europe.secureserver.netCNAME modifications:
mail.zombiesatemyxbox.com mapped to pop.secureserver.net
email.zombiesatemyxbox.com mapped to email.secureserver.netNotice the change from MX 1 to MX 0, which is annoying but easily solvable. However, the CNAME thing has completely threw me as I’ve never heard of it.
Going through all the support it seems the CNAME stuff there refers just to getting the domain mapped and doesn’t really refer to email, so when it’s talking about sub-domains and domains it doesn’t seem relevant to the instructions I’ve been given by GoDaddy who just ask that I put in these two lines.
The problem is, I have no idea how to do it. I’ve tried putting CNAME mail.zombies… in and it’s not worked, I don’t know the structure that will get it to work. I think it’ll be simple when you know how, but I’m completely stuck.
Any help much appreciated!

Hi. I thought you solved the problem a month ago…

Are you sure you’re putting the period in after the mail.zombiesatemyxbox.com? Each line needs to end with a full stop/period/dot.

Hey guys – thanks for replying:
@airodyssey – The other thread didn’t solve it. I waited 72 hours etc but the email was still bouncing. I got back in touch with GoDaddy and they mentioned the CNAME this time. The original thread you found has different recommended MX records (As I say, it’s now MX 0 instead of MX 1, and there is no mention of CNAME in the original thread).
@mmadfan – To be honest I have no idea how to do a CNAME entry and on the WordPress help I keep seeing a different method, e.g. CNAME in the middle instead of at the start, and none of it seems to relate specifically to email instead being about sub-domains, which is not the issue. I’ll try it again and put a dot at the end of each line and see…
I’ve tried different variations including:
CNAME mail.zombiesatemyxbox.com.pop.secureserver.net.
CNAME email.zombiesatemyxbox.com.email.secureserver.net.But it’s not registering it. As you can see from the original post the instructions GoDaddy gave said CNAME blah blah ‘mapped to’ blah blah.
It’s getting it to ‘map to’ it that I don’t understand…

This is wrong (altogether, and includes the domain name):
CNAME mail.zombiesatemyxbox.com.pop.secureserver.net. CNAME email.zombiesatemyxbox.com.email.secureserver.net.This is more like it (correct syntax, but not sure if it will work):
CNAME mail pop.secureserver.net. CNAME email email.secureserver.net.
