Updating domain to an unused one

  Hello, I am trying to update my WordPress domain (in the domain.wordpress.com format). When I try to update to my desired domain, I am told ‘not available’, however when I go to that actual domain path then I see that ‘The authors have deleted this site.’. So, it should be free to use for someone new, right? What is the next step to gain access to a WordPress domain that is no longer being used by someone else? Thank you.

  When someone deletes a free WordPress.com website address, it is gone forever. No one else can use it. The intent of this is to prevent scammers from misleading people with resurrected websites.
