Hi there – You should be able to do this using CSS if you have the Custom Design upgrade. If you upgrade to Business, the support staff can help you out; otherwise, you can ask for advice on how to do it in the CSS forum here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization -
Hate to disagree with the staff, but your answer is not correct and will result in the blog being suspended unless you have changed the TOS in the last few days
Current Terms of Service:
11. Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased.
The current policy about the footer in the support documentation:
May I remove the ‘Blog at WordPress.com’ credit in my site’s footer?
Although the Custom Design Upgrade certainly grants you the capability to hide the credit from your site’s footer, you are not permitted to do so. Even our VIP bloggers are required to maintain the credit.http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

PS – “Powered by WordPress” is the standard footer for WordPress.ORG installs
The OP would need to move off WordPress.COM and get their own host to be able to do that

@captnmike – We don’t allow removal of the footer credit, but I believe we allow users with the CSS upgrade to change the wording of it a bit, as long as the WordPress.com and theme author credits remain.

Then that is a change from staff positions in the past –
I have seen many people that wanted to obscure things, still leaving the WordPress.com but changing the blog at to several different things – and all were told no can do – nobody much reads the footer anyway and what are people ashamed of??

Ok all, I was mistaken, I’m sorry. @grsco, we don’t permit the footer credits to be altered from the original wording.
Part of the reasoning for this is that WordPress.com reserves the right to change the text in the credits as needed (i.e. sometimes we may need to add links to font attribution or something else or we may decide to change “Blog at WordPress.com” to say something slightly different) and if you modified the wording, it would be subject to change and it would most likely break any wording modifications you added via CSS.
I apologize for introducing confusion. Let me know if you have other questions about the Business upgrade. :)

@eurello
That’s ok. As long as I can put it back as “Powered by WordPress.com”
Now I can proceed upgrading two projects for business account. Cheers.@raincoaster
Thank you. -

Thank goodness we don’t have that wording confusion happening. We already have a significant number of “lost” WordPress.ORG bloggers posting here for help.
