Updating Gallery
-
Hi. I created some galleries a few months ago, now I would like to add more images to them. The images already exist in the Media Library. According to the Support documentation I have to insert the new image into the Post or Page, then it will be included in the gallery. Problem is, I do NOT want “loose” photos littering the page, I want everything in the Gallery (as they are now). I have tinkered with various attempts in a test bed blog I have (private) and nothing seems to work – I get a new photo on the page, and the gallery gets deleted. When I open the gallery icon, and look on the media tab listings, there is no choice such as “add to gallery”. So… it seems as if the only possible method to add photos to the gallery is to manually upload these images again from the computer, as if they were not already in my media library? That seems a tremendous waste of space, to have to do duplicates (we won’t get into my wasted time…) Is this for real, or is there some little trick somwhere I am missing? Please advise… thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Find the attachment id for each photo you want to add to the gallery.
“* Note: To get an attachment ID for an image, go to your Media Library and hover over the image title you want to exclude. You can find the ID in the URL (the number after attachment_id=).”
from http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/
Use the numbers with the gallery shortcode somewhat like this:
‘[gallery include="24,48,64"]‘Lots more information in this post:

Thanks for advice – give me a little time to work it through and I’ll report back – please don’t close yet – thanks.

No worry sinthea-
It is up to you to mark the thread resolved. Take your time.Threads I mark closed are duplicates by the same OP, answered in another thread.

Ok, sorry… I don’t get it.; I’ve read that linked gammagirl thing, I’ve looked at my gallery pages… I see in the Visual edit page just the big grey box with a camera and photo, which I can click to get the dialog box I’ve dealt with unsuccessfully before and can find no way to add / shift images from media to gallery. If I look at the HTML page all I see is the bracketed word gallery – no list of image numbers. So… where exactly are you suggesting I type the new image numbers? The quote above refers to excluding, as does much of that blog post – I want to INclude new ones, without losing old ones. Sorry, I’m not a developer, just a layman… please explain a little more? thanks.

@sinthea-Although you may consider it a waste of space and time, reuploading the images to appear in an existing Gallery is the fastest way to do it right now. It seems that you already optimize your images before you upload so that you’re really not using a lot of “extra” space.
If you go the “include” route, you have to include *all* the image IDs you want to appear in your Gallery, not just the new ones. For the record you find the ID numbers as 1tess outlined above, by hovering your mouse over the image title in the Media Library. You’ll see the number in the status bar at the bottom of your browser window.
Image handling is the one area that hopefully is earmarked for a serious makeover in any upcoming version of standalone WordPress, which means we’ll see those improvements first here on WordPress.com. It has already been discussed by staff for at least the last couple of years.

Jennifer – thanks for this, I was getting a feeling the “take it down and start over” was going to be the way to go… heavy sigh!! As long as the space holds out… !! Thanks very much, both Tess and Jennifer.

@sinthea-You don’t need to take anything down; just reupload the additional photos to the post where the Gallery is and they’ll be added to the existing Gallery.
Not to worry about space. If you optimize your photos before you upload, that free 3G of space will last for a very long time.

It works today, just not well and not something you can explain easily. I think the first reply was correct, but needs some clarification as the images are not added “loose”.
I go into my post which includes a gallery that was created sometime ago as well. I click the star at the top of my post that says to add media. When the popup comes up I choose from Media Library and select my image.
It then inserts code for the image (loose as it was described earlier). I do a Cntrl-Z (which is undo) and it removes the newly inserted code. Now I dont know why, but it is now included in the gallery. Crazy I know, but that is how I have been doing it.
You can then repeat these steps and rearrange them by selecting Gallery rather than Media Library and modify the numbers to order them, or it will simply by default continue to add the newly inserted images in front of the previous images.
WP definitely needs to work on this, but it will happen now.

@itliberty-if you uploaded your additional images directly to the Media Library they are considered “unattached”. You can then attach them to any Post or Page directly from the Media Library. This is discussed in this recent thread as well.
