Updating my blog from 2013

  I have a blog I started in 2013 with you and I want to update. I went to appearance then themes and I’m seeing one called twenty ten ~ why is it that old? Am I not accessing up to date themes and features because my blog is so old . . ?
  I went to the quick start guide but it didn’t come through.
  I’m a writier of poetry, fiction, screen plays and social commentary.
  I’d like to find a theme that could accommodate my writing with later options ( when I can afford it) for networking with others. Can you help me with this? Free options at this point.
