Updating my expired domain

  • Unknown's avatar

My domain name kycanonist has expired because for some stupid reason I neglected to pay the renewal fee. How do I go about renewing it. Please help!!! I need this back up and running asap and no one has been returning my support requests.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When we create a support ticket for Staff it has a date and timestamp. Staff have over 25 million to provide support for. They address the tickets the earliest date/time stamps first. If we keep contacting them that simply moves the date forward and it takes longer to get help.

Once a Domain registration expires you no longer own the domain. There is a brief grace period wherein you are given option to renew an expired the domain up to 2 weeks after expiration. It’s solely up to the Registrar whether to make a specific domain available or not. Getting your domain back again is not guaranteed but, in some cases, it’s possible to pay an additional fee ranging from $80 – $100 USD to the Registrar to recover the domain from Redemption. Take note that this fee is in addition to the normal renewal fee.

So, it’s going to cost me over $100 to get back a domain that I paid $17 for????

    (Emphasis mine)

Staff will confirm with you if you can recover the domain and how much it will cost.

  • Unknown's avatar

yes it will cost you more than the original $ 5– that it cost you when you registered your domain – I am not sure of the exact extra amount but it is set by the registrar and WordPress.COM does not make any extra money from the charges.

    Your $ 17 was for both domain registration ( $ 5–) and domain mapping ( $ 12—)

After you renew your domain name you will still need to renew the domain mapping also.

So, essentially it will be cheaper and easier to go into my “edit my pages,” copy and paste all of what I did, start a new blog with a new domain and just start all over… does that seem right?

  • Unknown's avatar

Right, I figured it would cost me $17 again, but upwards of $80 to $100? That seems a little extreme. It would be easier to just start all over using what I have saved here…

If you are within the grace period which I referred to above then there will be no redemption fee. It’s solely up to the Registrar whether to make a specific domain available or not. It takes about 90 days for a domain to completely expire and become available again to register, so one option is to wait for that and try to register it before anyone else does. But you said this above:

Please help!!! I need this back up and running asap

Depends on how much you liked your domain name and how much branding you had – business cards with your URL printed on it etc. For me I have had my domain name for several years now and it is a branding thing so the loss of the my domain name would be a big problem since I have many subscribers. I pay ahead on the domain registration (not on WordPress.COM) and I have the domain mapping paid ahead here also.

No need to copy and paste anything – you can just register a new domain name and map it to your existing site –

You can also wait until the domain name drops out of redemption and take your chances getting it again. There are squatters that buy up domain names that come out of registration and hold the name for ransom, so there is that risk.

No kidding. There is a HUGE cybersquatting industry.

  • Unknown's avatar

PS – there are two different time frames (each registrar is a bit different with different policies) – step one is a grace period – no extra charge but help is usually needed if you are over a few days – then there is step two where there is an extra charge.

    ~~TT

The cybersquatters are scum – I was helping some friends with a history site and one of the names they wanted was squatted on – the town has 55 people in it and the squatter wanted $ 1,000– for the name – no we did not pay – but did find a name that was close and did some work work with SEO to get the town name to come up reasonable on searches. The site was just for a bit of history of an area by people that had lived and worked there and wanted to preserve the past a bit –

It’s been since Dec 15th. I didn’t find out until someone from a radio show that I was a guest on told me that they tried to go to my web page and couldn’t…. I didn’t even receive notice that it was close to being due…. UGH!

So, it probably won’t be available again until the middle of March and even then, it will likely be taken up… though I don’t know why other than someone just trying to hold me hostage… as the name means nothing to anyone else….

So, it’s likely better to just get a new domain name and link it to what I already have? How would I go about doing that? I mean, it wouldn’t be much of a difference for me if it’s .com or .me… I’ll just order new cards and give the new address to the hosts of the radio shows that I’m a guest on…

    My opinion:

    1) I would go into the domain mapping and set the primary domain back to http://kycanonist.wordpress.com/ while this all gets sorted out – at least then you have some sort of a site working

    2) I would bit the bullet for the charges since you do have branding. Changing things and new cards etc is a hassle – so is calling everyone that you ever gave a card to and telling them you have a new name.

    3) If you bit the bullet on the charges then no new cards and your old name is back up and running as soon as you can work with the staff

    End Opinion.

I tried that, and it still pulls up nothing…

  • Unknown's avatar

How do I do that? I tried going to the domain section and making it my primary but it doesn’t seem to be working…

  • Unknown's avatar

I reset it and tried to go to kycanonist.wordpress.com and it just automatically went to kycanonist.com

    Am I doing something wrong?

  • Unknown's avatar

It just keeps telling me that kycanonist.com is my primary domain, no matter what I do to change it….

  • Unknown's avatar

Set http://kycanonist.wordpress.com as Primary and make sure the change is Saved, and then WAIT.

It can take up to 72 hours for DNS to settle down. Do not tinker with it during that time.

  • Unknown's avatar

How can I be sure it is saved? All is says for me to do is “update primary domain” which I did.
