Updating my poetry blog to a new theme

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I started my blog back in 2016, with a nice clear simple theme. I understand that all the old themes will be withdrawn and so want to update now to a simple free theme. As a retired IT professional I also feel uncomfortable using older themes less compatible with the new WP features.

However, I need some guidance and support. I’m currently very happy with my front page, can’t see the point of a site logo, and want a page layout that is word focused.

    Any suggestions? 😊

  • Hello –

Thanks for taking the time to get in touch. You’re correct, that eventually we have to retire themes as they aren’t compatible with browser updates. Rest assured, even if your theme starts to behave in odd ways, the content is totally safe.

You don’t necessarily need to do anything now if you’re happy with the theme that’s currently in use.

This is a popular option though which I thought you may enjoy:

Feel free to browse through all the options on https://WordPress.com/themes/ there are some buttons you can use to narrow down the options. I’d suggest using blog which will show you more writing and word based themes versus business and images. You can also choose to only see the free themes by hitting the free button.

Let me know if you need more help.

Thanks for your helpful reply Zinnia,

I was under the impression that all themes that were created before the introduction of the block editor are to be withdrawn soon. Hence my starting to look at newer themes.

I’m very happy with my present theme, I very like the banner image at the top of my homepage and would be very sad to lose it. So far all the themes I’ve looked at (including the one you have suggested) don’t have one.

Ah, sorry just worked out how to put a header on the home page Independent Publisher!

Great and glad you found that.

When themes are retired, they are not immediately removed, and when that time comes, we do let users of the theme know in advance that the theme will be removed. There isn’t a solid timeline on when a theme will be removed, and it depends in part on whether an update to WordPress software, or other software on the system will break the retired theme.
