updating name servers – doesn't work

  • Unknown's avatar

Since you updated the MX recors of my website, it is not reachable anymore. A message under domain settings says ” DNS needs updating”… I updated the settings at the site’s registrar (Domain.com) over 12 hours ago. Nothing has happened and even when I click the link to reconnect my domain to my blog, I get the “We checked the name servers and it looks like they’re not pointing to WordPress.com yet” message. Can you please help?? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Howdy!

It can take up 72 hours for DNS to fully propagate. If you look at the WHOIS records for your domain, the nameservers appear to be set correctly, but when I look at this tool:

    https://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/innerspacewatersports.com

Those changes are not showing as of yet.

What changes were made to the MX records? It doesn’t appear that those have been altered in any way.

I’d suggest waiting a bit longer, and if things don’t sort out in a day or so, then checking back in.

Hi Bruceallen, it said under domain settings “we imported innerspacewatersports.com’s Mx records” and that I was to “update the domain’s name servers”….

I did that all. I just don’t understand why this is happening all by itself. If I didn’t make any changes – who did ?? You are now saying that it doesn’t appear that anything had been altered. I have made a screen shot of this message https://innerspacewatersports.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/isws-at-wp-domain-settings-issue-2015-11-16.png
This is the website of a client who relies heavily on it and who certainly has lost business because his site has been off air since last Sunday. It would be nice if WP was to inform its users when they make changes or upgrades and when as a result interruption are to be expected.

The message about the MX records is routine message which simply informs you that when you mapped your domain, your existing records were imported. WP did not make any changes which resulted in the site being inaccessible.

It still does not appear that the nameservers have been correctly updated at the registrar.

    https://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/innerspacewatersports.com

The current issue is with the registrar – you should contact them and ensure that the nameservers are set up as shown.

In the meantime, your client can access their site at:

A routine message yes, however this domain was mapped years ago and since then, there hasn’t been any message from WP anywhere which required to “map the domain in 3 steps…” or to “update the name servers at the site’s registrar (https://innerspacewatersports.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/isws-at-wp-domain-settings-issue-2015-11-16.png). Further, your suggestion that the name servers “still do not appear to have been updated correctly at the registrar…” contradicts with your previous message where your link (WHOIS records) shows precisely the opposite (https://innerspacewatersports.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/isws-at-whois-2015-11-18.png). Here is a screen shot from the registrar’s site showing the server settings that I corrected on 2015-11-16 at 08:30 p.pm. PST (https://innerspacewatersports.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/isws-name-server-setting-at-domain.jpg). I think it is completely unecessary to have a ‘finger-pointing’ exchange. Fact is, the website is down since Sunday, November 15, 2015 and again, I am asking you for help.
At the registrar’s account in the overview page, there is an indication that this domain is “parked”. I have been told by Domain.com support that this setting is irrelevant to the ongoing issue and they have assured me that no changes were made at their end which would take the website down. Time is ticking down, it has been over 60 hours since I corrected the name server setting – this website is not on the net.

The website’s blog address now works again https://innerspacewatersports.wordpress.com/
but the domain innerspacewatersports.com does not.

    Thank you for the screenshots.

There is definitely something that is not right here.

I agree, yes, you’ve changed your nameservers at the registrar, and they are set correctly there according to the screenshots and the WHOIS records.

But it also seems like something is preventing that change from propagating, thus when you look at the DNS servers from around the world, they’re not showing the change.

Two things stick out to me. There is the curious bit you mentioned about the domain showing as “Parked.” and then in your WHOIS there is this line:

    Domain Status: clientHold

A lot of times that setting can render the domain unavailable, but usually it is placed there when the domain needs to be renewed, which yours does not.

I know this is frustrating. Could you possibly check with Domain.com once more about the “Parked” and “clientHold” items?

I’ll doublecheck on our end as well.

It appears that the site is working now?

    Hey Bruceallen,
the “Parked” and “clientHold” items were definately a little suspicious.
When I spoke with the registrar support on Monday, I was assured everything was correct at their end and no changes had been made to bring the website down. Today after I got your reply about the “parked domain” and “client/hold” response, I contacted Domain.com support again and made them read this forum thread to get a better picture about this issue. I have pasted the exchange with them below:

Sujith S: This is the reason you are unable to host the website with WordPress.com

I guess, it goes without saying that the support staff at Domain.com is not too keen on keeping their customers informed. Suspending a fully paid account (2018) without notifying anyone first regarding any issue, certainly lacks a great deal of professionalism. The same counts for the overall conduct – this operator wanted me to “take this up with the domain’s registrar…”
Duh! Their lack of intelligence and care has caused my client and myself a great deal of grief. One can only learn from this and hopefully make better choices in the future by not choosing this outfit.
Thank you kindly Bruceallen and Linda M. – Happiness Engineer at
WordPress.com for all of your support.
