Updating nameservers
-
Hello.
I’m trying to change DNS from wakesound.com (buyed in wordpress.com) to a self-hosted domain.
I’m following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/#update-name-servers
But, unfortunately, I can’t see the same menu. I’m only able to edit DNS records (a bit text box for write A, CNAME, MX…).
How can I point my domain (wakesound.com) to a new provider?
Thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please go to https://wakesound.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains and click on the Name servers tab. From there, you can update your name servers to point to your new hosting,

I am having the same issue. The screen in the help sections shows a tab that says nameservers, but it is no longer there. The edit domain tab is there, but it only lets you change the “A”, add Text, add MX, CNAME, etc. There is no tab anymore that changes nameservers. This needs to be fixed ASAP or new directions included on changing the nameservers because it is currently missing or hidden.
-
So if you go to https://gomidwife.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains can you go on from there?
-
I have finally managed to cancel private registration and generate auth code.
Thanks for your cooperation.

No I cannot do it even from that link. Once clicking on edit domain you go to the edit page. At the top of the page it says “Domain Management: gomidwife.com”. Then there are two tabs and only two tabs to choose from. The first is “Email”. The second is “Edit DNS”. There is no nameserver tab nor the other tabs that used to be there.

I’m trying to change the domain settings of one of my WordPress blogs to a different web host; I’ve gone through all of the transfer instructions previously, my new host has the details but the mapping isn’t pointing to their extension: I can get into the WordPress nameservers screen but every time I make the necessary changes it isn’t saved as soon as I exit. I’ve closed down and gone back in three times now and the new extension is missing and the wordpress nameservers just keep popping back up to torment me. WordPress is starting to feel like the Hotel California…..you can check in but never leave!!
-
@gomidwife you did not register your domain through WordPress.com, so you will need to go to your domain registrar (which appears to be Launchpad) to update name servers.
@wordswithnannaprawn what are the exact name servers you are trying to use, and is this for wordswithnannaprawn.com?
-
No, I’m trying to move my other blog: alleyesonthese.com to squarespace.com. I’ve gone through all the steps, unlocked the domain etc. I’m trying again today with the nameserver updated to include ext.squarespace.com but haven’t deleted the wordpress name servers. As it can take up to 72 hours to update I still have no idea if it’s going to work.
-
You will need to enter any and all name servers exactly as provided by Squarespace, and you need to remove all name servers that point to WordPress.com.
If you can’t get it to work, let me know exactly which name servers you are trying to use and I can try it on my end. Note that there are usually at least two.

Squarespace have only provided one: ext.squarespace.com Removing the wordpress ones and entering this one brings up a ‘success’ message but when I log out and back in wordpress has not saved the changes.
Squarespace list the process on the premise that there will be three fields: Alias, Cname, and Points to. In wordpress I presume this is the page listed as ‘Edit DNS’ with fields A, NS, and CNAME which are not quite the same, I can’t manually edit and save these fields because the nameserver changes won’t save from the other page. These are the instructions from Squarespace, they do not have a specific guide for transferring a domain from a WordPress site unfortunately so it’s been very difficult to match up the information from WP with the instructions on Squarespace. I’m not sure what else I can do from my end unless I’m putting the wrong information in the wrong places?!
Step 1 – CNAME
Log in to your domain registrar’s site and locate the Zone File Settings, DNS Manager, or similar area of your control panel. Here you will create a CNAME record that points your domain to Squarespace. You’ll generally see three fields:
Alias – Should be www
(indicating that the http://www.yourdomain.com record should point to Squarespace)Type – Should be CNAME
(indicating that you would like to point to Squarespace by using its name)Points To – Should be ext.squarespace.com
(do not use your Squarespace site address!) -
Actually this is not true. If you look at my billing history you will see that on October 14, 2013 I registered the domain through wordpress. I have the receipt. The domain registrar was transferred to hostgator (launchpad) on March 24. Leaf DNS shows that all nameservers are still launchpad because though the hosting has switched to hostgator, the DNS nameservers are still locked and unable to be changed except through wordpress. As this option is not enabled on any part of my dashboard I cannot change the nameservers. As launchpad only hosts the site but the nameserver still points to wordpress I cannot change the nameserver on their site.

@wordswithnannaprawn I have updated your DNS to point to Squarespace’s IP address (they don’t do name servers, which I had forgotten). You should be all set.
@gomidwife While it is true you initially registered the domain through WordPress.com, you transferred your domain registrar to Launchpad. This change has gone into effect and shows up in a WHOIS search on the domain: http://who.is/whois/gomidwife.com
Because of that, we cannot access your name server information any longer, and you will have to work with Launchpad to update that information.

URGENT!!! you’ve mapped the wrong one!!! My request and the process I went through to authorise and transfer a blog was for alleyesonthese.com NOT wordswithnannaprawn.com please rectify immediately Word Press – In the thread above I clearly answered your question about which blog I was trying to transfer @jackiedana right your ‘happiness engineer’ title isn’t making me very happy right now. I have not authorised OR requested that my primary blog and domain wordswithnannaprawn.com be transferred anywhere. Please read the comments threads more thoroughly and notify me immediately, this is urgent I cannot post a scheduled post today because of this situation.
-
@wordswithnannaprawn I’m very sorry about that. I’ve updated the records and everything should be updated on the internet shortly. In the meantime you can always access your posts/dashboard at http://wordswithnannaprawn.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ .
I noticed that you had purchased the premium bundle on alleyesonthese.wordpress.com. Since you are moving that site elsewhere, I’ve added a new premium bundle on your wordswithnannaprawn site with a year’s expiration, on the house. I hope this makes up for my momentary blunder.
-
Thanks…..I’ve just had somewhat of a meltdown at this end…..it’s been really frustrating to try and get that other domain moved after going through all the process’s on both web sites, so this morning when I saw your message I was actually quite relieved that it wasn’t me just not following the instructions correctly! I could have cried when I realised you’d moved my other domain instead!! alleyesonthese.com is still pointing to WordPress, can you confirm that you will be redirecting that domain to squarespace.com as originally requested? thanks, sorry for the over reaction and many thanks for the bundle offer – I’m really happy with my more wordy blog on WordPress and don’t want to move it anywhere! The photography one isn’t working out quite as well for me which is why I’m trying another web host (though I note that as if she read my mind the lovely Cheryl has done a whole post about WP photography themes today!!).
-
The alleyesonthese.com site should now be pointing to Squarespace… it may have taken a little time to update.
Again, I am very sorry for the confusion.

Hi!
I was reading this and it kind of resemble the issue I’m facing now.
There are 2 domains which were bought thru wordpress. And I want to set http://doingwellcentre.com as the primary domain (and the other domain http://jasonslleow.com will be redirected). I’m supposed to rename the NS for both, but under “Domain Management”, I can only see the NS settings option in the menu for “jasonslleow.com”, but not “doingwellcentre.com”. There’re only 2 options available – Email and Edit DNS.
FYI, originally it came with the settings of ns23.domaincontrol.com and ns24.domaincontrol.com, which was pointing to another registrar (godaddy.com). So I removed this and tried to enter ns1 and ns2.wordpress.com but wasn’t able to do so.
Please kindly help with issue as I have not been able to access that domain since last week. Thank you.
-
BTW, when I tested on the jasonslleow.com as the primay domain, it worked like a charm (cuz the NS settings are there and done correctly). Please kindly help to fix the NS settings for http://doingwellcentre.com
Thanks a bunch!
