Updating other themes – will this mess up my new theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m building a site on a theme called Salient, I have 4 updates to the themes Twenty Sixteen-Twenty, and I want to update it since it might close security holes but I’m afraid it will overwrite some of my styles. ‘Please Note: Any customizations you have made to theme files will be lost. Please consider using child themes for modifications.’

I have no backups for the site I’m building which makes me nervous. Is this just an update or should I not do it?

  • Hi there!

What’s the address of the site you’re working on?

Please note that these forums are for WordPress.com hosted sites only. If your site is using the open-source WordPress.org software, we won’t be able to help you out and you’ll want to seek help at these forums:

  • Thanks, yeah that site is not hosted here. And, if you actually edit a theme rather than using a child theme, your customizations will be lost with updates, hence the message suggesting a child theme instead.

    Here’s how to get started:

    Child Themes

Going forward, you’ll also want to use the correct forums for self-managed installations, at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Or, you’d be welcome to migrate your site to our services. You can find our pricing here:

    Cheers!

Is there a way I can get on the phone with one of you, I need to push the site live and I have the info needed to do this but 1. I don’t know how to do it on my own, and 2. I think I’m using a child theme of Salient but I need to make sure.

I’m using Bluehost and Network Solutions.

  • WordPress.com does not have phone support. All of it is through online channels, like this one.

If you’d like to move the site to our hosting we can help you with the site then.

But, as it is, we don’t have access, it’s not hosted by us. Use the advice that supernovia posted in her last response.
