  If the author of a plug in has created an update, what is the best way to install it?

  The site that you have mentioned is hosted on NameCheap, Inc. If you have setup your website using self-hosted open source WordPress.org software you need to post your question on .org forum here https://wordpress.org/support , as WordPress.com is a public forum helping with the sites hosted on WordPress.com and the assistance that you will get over here may not be that relevant.
