Updating themes
-
Hi. I want to change my theme but don’t want it to go live until I’ve done tweaks. As soon as I click activate it goes online and it’s a right mess. I’m trying out various themes to see how they work with my content first, so is it possible to save drafts and preview before publishing? Thanks.

Hi there,
Pretty much any change that you make goes live just as soon as you hit the “Save” button. There’s no way to incrementally make changes without having them reflected immediately on your site. The best thing you can do is make liberal use of the “Preview” button whenever you have it available to make sure that the changes you’re making aren’t disastrous!
I apologize for that inconvenience!

Thanks for reply.
I’m struggling to find a new theme that works for me, perhaps you can point me in the right direction. I want a template that either has a full or flexible width so it doesn’t look too squashed and works on different media, a custom header that goes full width or nearly full width and is quite clean looking. It’s for a food blog but I want to sell my services as a food stylist too. I want my social networking icons visible somewhere at top or in right hand bar. I want to replace standard icons with nice looking ones if possible too. Can any of the templates support this?
Truly Minimal or Twenty Twelve look good but can I tailor the position of the social networking icons, which are currently at bottom? A lot of my images are portrait so means templates such as Fresh and Clean, which would be great to display photos, won’t really work as it’s designed for landscape… Help! Sorry, getting bogged down and would appreciate a bit of guidance.
Thank you.

Sorry, one more question. Can I also upload my own icons to go in main menu, so my Recipes link would have a spoon or bowl icon next to it?
Thanks for your help. -
Hi there!
Yes, you can do most of the things that you asked me about. It can require a bit of work, and you have to have the Custom Design add on, but that’s included in the WordPress.com Premium which you’ve already got so you’re good to go!
We actually did a blog post recently which walks through how to create a truly beautiful custom blog from a pretty plain-jane looking theme. You can read the whole thing here:
So as long as you have the idea of what you want, you should be able to get it through a theme such as Twenty Twelve, which is really quite customizable!

Thank you! I’ve made the change to Twenty Twelve so hopefully I can update the rest after a few tutorials. I still can’t get the summary versions of most recent posts working on the home page. It still thinks it’s a static page. Can you help?
Also, how do I get rid of the annoying duplicate of page name at top of each page. If I leave it blank the title disappears from the main menu?
Thanks, Val

Hello again,
I tried to insert the code into CSS as per the tutorial link you sent me (below) but to no avail! I’ve even gone into Developer’s Tools via my Chrome browser and tried to insert it there but no changes. When you click on Custom Design > CSS you don’t actually see any code to add to / amend. How do I see the original code? Think I’ve got a lot to learn….ul { list-style-image: url(‘bullet-list-heart’); }

Hey there,
We actually have a forum which is specifically dedicated to issues which deal with CSS issues. On there you can browse around and look for others who may have had the same problem which you have or if you can’t find anything like that you can post the question yourself and one of the volunteers there will be able to help you out.
The CSS Customization forum can be found right here:
