Updating Themes

Hi, I have recently had the task of updating our website. The person who built it left the company. I want to update themes – there are several new updates available. The Note says “Please Note: Any customisations you have made to theme files will be lost. Please consider using child themes for modifications.” My question is how do I find out if we customised the themes? My head says she would have done to build the website, but I’m not a web builder, so it maybe she just used the theme as it was. Is there a way to find out? I am worried about updating the themes, and it messing up our whole website? Any advice would be great. Warm regards, Angela

  • If you’re hosted on WordPress.com and already using plugins and custom themes, this means you have the ability to use Jetpack Backups. To confirm whether you’re hosted on WordPress.com or another host, could you share the URL of your site?

You could update the theme, see if it affects your site, and if it does, you can restore your site to how it was before the update, using backups. Please see more information here:

Hi, yes please if you could help. Apologies for delay, I am part time.

    URL is https://buildtechuk.co.uk/

  • Hey @angela89a3b4af0a

Thank you for providing us with the website URL; your site isn’t hosted on WordPress.com. It’s a self-hosted WordPress site with HostMaria (or at least a HostMaria reseller account) based on the name servers (https://wordpress.com/site-profiler/buildtechuk.co.uk), and the domain is registered with GoDaddy. Because of that, WordPress.com support tools won’t be able to make changes or troubleshoot updates for you.

The best next step is to get in touch with HostMaria support (or check billing details to know the hosting provider), as they manage the server where your site actually lives. They can help you with:

    • Theme and plugin updates
    • Backups before updating
    • Any server-related issues that might be blocking updates

If you’re not sure what to ask them, you can simply tell them you need help updating your WordPress theme on a self-hosted site.

Hope that helps point you in the right direction
