As far I know the themes and plugins here at WordPress.com is updated automatically. No action required from the users.
May I know what you are trying to update?

I got an e-mail notifying me of the latest version (4.8) being available. I read on-line instructions regarding this, especially the “one click” option, but I could not find such a link on my dashboard, hence the question. How do I check which version I’m running, please?

You are logged in to your WordPress.com site https://raygirling.wordpress.com/ which has virtually no content. Upgrades don’t apply to WordPress.com sites. If you received an e-mail about a WordPress.org upgrade you must have a self-hosted WordPress.org site elsewhere.
