Updating WordPress for my website

My website has a customized theme and the picture we used and the layout completely disappeared 2-3 weeks ago! I called iPage (host) but didn’t get it restored.
My web designer says I should *not* update WordPress or I’ll lose all my custom designs/graphics. But if I don’t update, will I miss out on all the protections and improvements to your product and perhaps risk exposure to hackers? It looks like it updates automatically.
QUESTION: What are the consequences of *not* updating to your latest version?? If that is done automatically on my website, would that somehow disturb a customized theme and photo?? I had to do a quick fix, but I’m not happy.
