updating wordpress site

A blog that I recently started managing is coming up with a notification that there is a new update. Some of the plugins that we use for SEO apparently no longer work with the older version of the blog due to its age. I am wanting to update it but when I called WordPress to find out a safe process to do the update they told me that I needed to just do it, let it crash and then call them to repair it. I asked if there was a way to do a back-up first or to make sure that I do not lose any data and they said, no, just do the back-up and for $150.00-$250.00 they would fix it…I’m a bit nervous to proceed with pushing update and was hoping I could get something a bit more definitive.

  • Hi there, sorry for the confusion. To clarify a few things:

    when I called WordPress

WordPress is free software — there’s no one to call, but there is a community forum here:
    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

WordPress.com is our service. We do offer direct support, however, that’s by chat rather than by phone. Also, your site would not have been out of date if it were hosted here with us. So whoever you called, it definitely was not WordPress. My apologies that they pretended to be.

I would contact your host, first. I can’t tell who they are without a link to your site. But they will be able to help you get a backup of your files and database, and tell you how to restore those if needed.

Then you can either proceed with updates on your own (knowing you’ve got a safety net and community help if needed) or hire someone to do them for you.

Noting too, you’d be welcome to migrate to our services if you’d like. WordPress.com’s services include hosting, SSL, security, software maintenance, and award-winning support. You can see our pricing here:
    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

If you want to use our services and need help getting started, just let us know.

Best wishes whatever you decide to do!
