  Why do I have to upgrade to get a plug in for booking?

  Wordpress.com is a shared hosting platform. As installing third party plugins and themes need another server and security configuration, this is only possible if you upgrade tot the Business or eCommerce Plan.

  In addition to what @staartmees noted, you indeed would indeed need a Business plan or higher to use third-party plugins. You can review plan features and pricing here: https://wordpress.com/free/#plans

  It’s worth noting that the Premium plan also allows you to use the Calendly block, which might also suit your needs.
