  I would like to try out an upgraded option for one month to see if it works well for me. If I decide to upgrade after one month will the annual 50% discount still apply if I choose to pay annually?

  Most coupons have an expiration period associated with them, so it is likely that it will not work after one month.

  Instead, I would recommend that you proceed with purchasing the yearly promotion, and you can evaluate it that way. As long as you do not register a free domain name (included in the yearly plan) and cancel within the period here, you will be eligible for a full refund: https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/

  Also, is there anything specific that you are looking to evaluate? If you can tell us a little more about what you are trying to set up we can confirm if that is something you can check out on a free site or something that would require the plan in order to evaluate.
