Upgrade Banner Blocking a Large Amount of My Content
-
Hi, the upgrade banner which I’ve been issued is blocking a large amount of my page content (it possibly doesn’t help that I have my viewing size set to 125% as my eyesight is getting poor). It apparently isn’t removable without me paying £3 per month to upgrade which, as a purely hobby blogger and a not very rich pensioner, I don’t actually want to do – I pay a fortune for being online in the first place. I don’t need any added features either as my blog is just very simple – words and pictures of my mountain exploits – much of which is for my own enjoyment and reading.
I’ll attach a URL to the screenprint saved in my media library to illustrate. Is there nothing can be done to remove the banner apart from me paying to have it removed?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give on this… Incidentally, none of my other blogging friends have got this banner…
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The banner is part of our Terms of Services you accepted when you set up your free wordpress.com site. The only way to remove that banner is by upgrading to the Personal Plan. FYI: on every platform that offers a free website, you have to agree they show adverts.
-
Hi @staartmees Thanks. This new post by @mountaincoward is a follow up to this one https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/wordpress-banner-when-viewing-site/ where I requested her to open a new forum thread about the overlapping banner issue on her site. :)
-
Adverts appearing here and there in a post while scrolling or reading I don’t mind but something which is taking up part of my valuable screen space on a permanent basis isn’t what I’d call just ‘advertising’!
-
-
All free sites on the wordpress.com platform show that banner. Perhaps they upgraded to a paid plan or they have a self-hosted site.
-
I wouldn’t lose any sleep over that top banner. Everywhere you go on the Interweb there is far worse ads and clickbait to be dodged. There is no such thing as a free lunch and it does cost WordPress.com to keep our free sites up and working.
I’m more concerned about cookies that help companies and ad producers know everything about you. For instance last week I visited eBay and this week your site displays to me a slideshow of a number of the items I looked at there.

-
Also there are a lot of other providers that offers a free website but they bombard your free site with popups and far more adds. As @themagicrobot said, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over that top banner as wordpress.com isn’t that pushy.
-
@staartmees @themagicrobot Allow me to quote a little bit of what @mountaincoward said in the other thread I linked to:
I don’t mind ads etc. appearing during scrolling through a post but this banner is (obviously deliberately) blocking most of my screen so I can only see a little bit of what I’m reading all the time.
To which I replied:
That banner shouldn’t be blocking anything and if it is, that needs support help. For that I’d suggest opening a new forum thread with a screenshot of what you see.
And that is this thread, which again I’ve marked for staff assistance #modlook
I would kindly and respectfully request that anyone answering not remove the tag. If staff deem there is no issue with the banner blocking @mountaincoward content, then that is there call. Thanks.
-
As you can see in the screenshot mountaincoward provided, the wordpress.com banner doesn’t take an important part of the screen.
I noticed the theme she used is outdated, so upgrading to a more recent theme could solve the problem.
Only people who give a reply or a Staff member can remove a tag but normally no one of us would remove the modlook tag.
-
The top banner has affected a few older themes by obscuring the titles but that doesn’t seem to be the case with this particular theme/site.
-
It isn’t obscuring any titles – just cutting down the amount of webpage below the titles I can read – which means photos etc. are bisected when I’m viewing them. Presumably they are for my readers too.
As to it being on all free WordPress blogs, none of my friends have a paid for blog as they’re all like me – very smalltime and just writing about their hobbies… and none of them do have this banner as I’ve asked them all!

Hi there and thank you for your patience!
While reviewing your website, we noticed that the banner does not overlap with any other elements on the website, however if you do see that, please share a screenshot of it @mountaincoward.
As you’ve mentioned, the only way to remove this banner is to upgrade to one of our paid plans. The most affordable one is the Personal plan and you could save in cost by choosing one of the annual, two or three year plans. If you’d like to quickly compare the pricing, please check this page:

Hi, it’s not overlapping anything as such but, if you look at the example in my initial post above, this banner, when added to the necessary 3 bars at the top of my screen, means that I’m only left with about 2/3 of my screen to view the blog posts which means I often can’t see a full photo in one go or a whole paragraph if it’s a long one. I’m sure if I had my viewing size set to 100% things would be better spacewise but I have to have it set to 125% as my eyesight is going.
-
I think I can’t see why the banner is going to remain permanently as, like many hobby bloggers, I’m not going to be opting for a paid plan as I can’t afford to be paying out for extras in anything and I definitely don’t need more features.
-
Thank you for letting us know! Could you share some examples of the banner where it is not showing up, please?
-
-
Hi Robert, I don’t quite understand what you’re wanting me to provide? The banner is at the top of my blog pages when I’m in my main blog – it doesn’t show up on the stats, admin or post preview pages – just when I’m viewing posts.
-
Hi Robert, I don’t quite understand what you’re wanting me to provide?
I think maybe he is referring to earlier in the thread where you said none of your WordPress blogging friends have the banner. A screenshot of those sites without a banner would be useful. Perhaps they use the wordpress software but at different hosts?
-
As you set your browser zoomlevel to 125%, the part of the screen you can see, gets smaller. That explains why the wordpress.com banner looks bigger for you.
