Upgrade Banner Blocking a Large Amount of My Content
-
Hi Robert, apparently my readers don’t generally see the banner on my blog (although some do) so I won’t be able to see what their situation is like for them when they’re logged in. But I could post a screenprint of what I see on their blogs if you think that’s going to be helpful to anyone.
Hi Startmees – yeah I know it doesn’t help my screen availability that I’m setting the size to 125% but my eyes are going so I don’t really have a choice. I suppose I could get some x2 glasses and reduce it to about 110% but I think 100% would just be too small whatever I did.

I think all this hinges on what you deem to be “a large part of your content”. Is a few millimetres “a large part”. It would be nice if WordPress.com would give people a little “x” to dismiss the message once people have seen it.
It also depends on how the majority of people view your site and are they as annoyed as you are with a banner. Do they notice it? On a PC or laptop the message just sits there no matter how much you scroll. But viewing your site using a phone the message is there at the top initially but is soon out of sight and out of mind as you start scrolling down.
Ever since someone invented newspapers, the radio 100 years ago, Billboards through to streaming TV, adverts have helped to fund content and the only way to avoid adverts is to pay a premium.

TBH when I zoom my browser (Firefox) higher than 100% on your website, the banner remains proportionally sized to the rest of the screen, so it seems it’s not the banner itself, but the zoom level. I’m not sure that changing themes to a newer theme would resolve this issue (which 2020testjj also suggested in that other thread)
Are you also zooming your entire computer display? My computer default is 125% for exactly the same reason you mentioned 👓 and so that already makes everything larger as well.
(PS I don’t know who’s removing tags from this thread, but please leave these here. TIA)

Hi MagicRobot, it’s the permanent presence of this banner/advert which is annoying me (and some of my readers can see the banner and don’t like it). I don’t mind any temporary adverts and, indeed, even expect them as the price I pay for having a free hobby blog but I can’t see why this banner needs to sit there forever as I’ve read it and made my decision…

A quick Google and it seems that currently 60% of Internet traffic is accessed by smart phones and 40% by traditional computers. That 60% figure will grow fast. The “upgrade” banner isn’t an issue for phone users and soon “traditional” “personal” computers (PCs) will be novelties only be used by the few that are still office-based.

@themagicrobot Snort! Not happening here anytime soon! (Typed on the full keyboard of her desktop personal computer.) :p
@mountaincoward I understand your sentiment, but that banner is considered part of WordPress.com’s advertising, even if it is “in-house”. And the only way to remove ads on WordPress.com is, as has already been mentioned here and elsewhere, by upgrading.
Leaving this here JIC: If you want to gain more vertical screen real estate, hitting F11 temporarily hides the address bar and the bookmarks toolbar in your browser as well as the bottom toolbar. It won’t remove the banner, but it will give you more vertical screen space.

Hi JustJennifer – me neither – I won’t be switching to a smart phone at all and squinting at a small screen and carrying a heavy brick around when I can just use my laptop sat on my desk with, like you say, a proper keyboard (essential for touch-typists). Not only that but typical ‘touch-screen’ items don’t recognise my fingertips at all and I generally get no response, or patch response using them. Plus you end up with greasy fingerprints all over your screen (even with clean hands).
That’s a brilliant tip about the F11 key – I never knew about that! I’ll be using that in future to browse my blog pages. Thanks very much for that!

Hi MagicRobot – I only go online in the evenings at my house – when I’m out and about during the day (usually in the mountains), I carry nothing with me and am too busy looking at the scenery (or the inside of a cloud) to be playing on a phone like most people do (i.e. the ones who are getting rescued all the time)! It would be pointless for me to use a smartphone in the house and, as Jennifer points out, they don’t have a keyboard for touch-typists like myself so would be no use to me whatsoever.
P.S. I’d call a feature across the screen demanding that you pay money to remove it blackmail rather than advertising! But Jennifer has given me a great suggestion to increase my screen space above so I’ll be using that in future and not worrying about the banner.

Hey @mountaincoward! Thank you for letting us know and I’m glad to see you’ll use Jennifer’s suggestion moving forward.
I can assure you the Free plan websites had this banner for a while and it is in no way used to blackmail our users into upgrading, but to promote our platform. The same applies to the ads that are present on the website. These can be removed with a paid plan and get more features in return.
I’m going to mark this thread as solved for now, so feel free to open a new one if you have any questions!
